[edit] History

The White Ensign club was formed in 1951 as a club for former members of the Royal Navy. The name refers to the Navy's White Ensign flag. The club began accepting players who were not former seamen in 1954, but kept the name.[2]

After many years playing in local football, most notably in the Southend Borough Combination,[5] White Ensign joined the Essex Intermediate League Division Two in 2002 and were promoted to Division One at the first attempt. Although they then went on to win the championship in two of their first three seasons in the First Division,[4] the club are currently ineligible for promotion as their ground, the Borough Football Combination Headquarters, does not meet the requirements of higher leagues. Specifically, the ground is not fenced off and therefore does not allow a "gate" to be taken.[2]

[edit] Honours

  • Essex Intermediate League Division One Champions, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2006-07
  • Essex Intermediate League Division Two Champions, 2002-03[4]

[edit] Notable former players

Paul Benson, currently of Dagenham & Redbridge, began his career at White Ensign.[6]
