Whitby Mental Health Centre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Whitby Mental Health Centre is a mental health facility located in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

The origins of the facility date back to the creation of an Ontario Hospital for the Criminally Insane and the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital in 1912. In 1996, a new hospital was officially opened as the Whitby Mental Health Centre on the same site as the former Psychiatric Hospital.

Today, the centre provides in-patient and out-patient care for people recovering from serious mental illness. Its service area includes portions of the City of Toronto, York Region, Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes.

In 2006, management of the Centre was transferred from the Ontario government to a local community Board of Directors, establishing the WMHC as a stand alone specialty psychiatric hospital.
