[edit] Origin and recording

The song was originally written during the sessions for Pearl Jam's 1993 album Vs., however the band decided not to include it on that album. The song was played throughout Pearl Jam's 1993-1994 Vs. Tour before it was included on Vitalogy.[1]

In the liner notes of Vitalogy the lyrics to "Whipping" are written on a copy of a petition to Bill Clinton against Pro-Life killings of abortionists. The letter references the murder of David Gunn, a Florida physician who specialized in OB/GYN.

[edit] Reception

Al Weisel of Rolling Stone called the song "hard edged and catchy."[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

When introducing the song at Pearl Jam's June 20, 1995 concert in Morrison, Colorado, Eddie Vedder said, "This song is about getting your ass kicked...I wrote it, personal experience."[3]

[edit] Live performances

The song made its live debut at the band's May 13, 1993 concert in San Francisco where the band premiered most of the newly recorded songs for Vs.[4] A live performance of "Whipping" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
