Whinney Hill (street)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whinney Hill is a street in the city of Durham, in England, on a hill of the same name, that name being derived from the whin (gorse) shrub that grows there in profusion. It is in the south-east of the city and runs north-south from Durham Prison and the Durham City Cricket Grounds, on the banks of the River Wear, to the roundabout on the Stockton-on-Tees road near the University of Durham science site. The lower site of Durham Johnston Comprehensive School is located on it.

Durham's first passenger station was built at the north end of Whinney Hill although this closed in 1954.[1] This site is now occupied by Durham Magistrates' Court and Durham University's Parsons Field buildings.
