[edit] WikiProject Michigan
Welcome. Regarding your question on my talk page, there's no initiation ritual or anything -- like everything on Wikipedia, participation is voluntary. Right now there isn't any single effort going on with the project. If you want to suggest any ideas, that'd be great. Or you can add items to the Project ToDo page. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Cheers, older≠wiser 12:37, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup
The simplest way to list something for cleanup is to add the {{cleanup}} template to the top of the page. {{cleanupdate|month year}} is preferred (e.g. {{cleanupdate|March 2006}}) but if you use the former someone else will change it in a few days. If you use these generic templates, it is best to explain on the talk page what sort of cleanup you think the article needs. There are more specific templates that you can use - for a complete list see Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup. Thryduulf 23:16, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh...I was just curious about how people found out about it. It used to be an itty-bitty page, but now it's a really nice place to hang out and relax. Just curious, that's all :-) --HappyCamper 04:14, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Userboxes
I'm not aware of any tutorial specifically for userboxes. If you just want to know how to use them then Wikipedia:Userboxes#Grouping userboxes appears to be where the instructions are. Other sections of that page also deal with how to create them. More generally there is a tutorial about using templates (which is what userboxes are) at Help:Template. - Strange, the old way worked fine on Mozilla Firefox. Anyways, since the new version of the the template (with CSS style="clear:both;") may mess up some Wikipedian's user pages by moving the template, I created a new one, so that Wikipedians may pick. Anyways, I suggest you check Wikipedia:Browser notes to see if your browser is listed as having this problem, and if not, report it. : ) Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 20:53, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, and thank you for working to keep Wikipedia neat and tidy! :)
I'd like to call your attention to the above-referenced article.
It was created at 2006-06-16 19:28:27.
You tagged it for speedy deletion at or about 2006-06-16 19:30:58.
Between the creation of this article, and your decision that it should go, the our auteur, namely me, had 151 seconds in which to -- add content, establish notability, cite references, wikify, NPOV-ify, spellcheck, polish, and generally ensure that nobody would happen along with the slightest excuse to delete it.
So, in closing, thanks for helping, but remember that we're all people too, trying to build an encyclopedia, so say the alphabet backwards a coupla times before opening fire next time, maybe?
Thanks! :)

Why did you place a speedy delete on Seven World Trade Center tenants?
This list is not non-sense. It is a sourced list of the tenents in WTC7 prior to that building's collapse. It is part of a series of list-articles, including One World Trade Center tenants (article started September 14th 2001) and Two World Trade Center tenants (article started September 17th 2001). [edit] Champ (food)
If you wish to contest the speedy tag please use the hangon tag DO NOT remove the speedy tag
You nominated this article for speedy delete, citing that it was nonsense. Knowing for a fact that the champ dish is most definatelynot nonsense, I decided not to waste everyone's time with yet another useless debate on the matter.
In future, I would kindly suggest two things before doing something similar in the future:
- 1) A short bit of research - if you can take the time to monitor newly created articles, you can take the time to Google the subject matter.
- 2) Take a look at the creation time. I created this article at 20:30. Exactly 2 minutes later you had nominated it for speedy. Sometimes editors feel a need to create 'placeholder' articles in the process of organising something much bigger. I am responsible for creating the Northern Ireland portal, the Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board and the Northern Irish articles Wikiproject. I mention this because I am (at the minute virtually single-handedly) responsible for organising and structuring articles relating to Northern Ireland. A quick investigation of my userpage, or my contribution list would have made that clear to you.
Your arbitrary decision to hand out a speedy nomination caused me time and effort that could have been put to better use, as an eager admin actually went ahead and deleted the article after you re-inserted your speedy tag. Now I'm also having to explain myself to three people where, instead, you should have explained yourself first: that's what article discussion pages are for, for example.
Now don't get me wrong - I despise the vandalism and gobbledegook that often gets added to the 'pedia, and I appreciate the efforts of editors and admins alike to kerb this. But if I can research things before I add deletion tabs etc, then so can everyone else. To be frank, I'm starting to get annoyed with over-vigilance also: it appears to create almost as much hassle as vandalism on occasion. --Mal 13:39, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Wussies (band) speedy deletion
Hello Whispering, the reason why I created this article was because it is mentioned in a news item on the Music Portal. So I'm not sure that it should be deleted. Madder 15:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Hello Whispering, I appreciate all the hard work you do in editing Wikipedia and removing articles, but I don't think you considered what I said above before deleting, since you haven't replied. I don't know anything about this band, all I know is that it's prominently featured on the Music Portal and so it deserved an article. I don't know why you are contesting this. Madder 19:54, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- If you don't know anything about the band why make the article? You could always do some research on the band then repost the article. BJK 20:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- BJK aka. Whispering, this is not the principle of Wikipedia. If you read the editing policy, it says:
-
However, one of the great advantages of the Wiki system is that incomplete or poorly written first drafts of articles can evolve into polished, presentable masterpieces through the process of collaborative editing. This gives our approach an advantage over other ways of producing similar end-products. Hence, the submission of rough drafts should also be encouraged as much as possible.
-
- How is this article supposed to develop if the first version keeps getting deleted because there isn't enough text? If this is why you deleted the article, that is very inappropriate. Madder 20:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Rough drafts aren't usually two sentences long. Rough drafts usually are at least three paragraphs long. A introduction, a body and a conclusion. BJK 20:19, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
-
- Again I only need to quote the Wikipedia Editing policy:
-
-
-
During this process, the article might look like a first draft—or worse, a random collection of notes and factoids. Rather than being horrified by this ugliness, we should rejoice in its potential, and have faith that the editing process will turn it into brilliant prose.
-
-
-
- Rather than delete articles just because you don't think there's enough text, you should rejoice in their potential, Whispering. Deleting an article because there isn't enough text is not justifiable, because the whole point of Wikipedia is that someone else will then come along and add to it. There was no justification for deleting this article. Madder 20:28, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- sigh* Look we can both argue till our faces turn blue but we aren't going to agree. Besides I didn't delete the article I only put it up for deletion if anything you should be mad at the admin that did. So you go your way I'll go mine and never the twain shall meet. BJK 20:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion
Regarding the article Vinod Kumar Shukla, which you tagged for speedy deletion with the reason "it is an article about a person, group of people, band or club that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject", I wanted you to know that I have removed the speedy deletion tag. This article does not qualify for speedy deletion because the article does contain some assertions of notability, like having one of his books made into a movie, although it did not when you tagged it. If you still want the article to be deleted, please use the WP:PROD process. Thanks! Stifle (talk) 15:24, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your tagging of AnnaKusma's user subpage for CSD
I removed the CSD tag you placed on User:AnnaKucsma/Geography/France, because users are allowed to keep copies of their work in their user space for preparation in making articles. Secondly, the "not English" criteria applies only to articles. Regards, Kimchi.sg 14:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tomkins and friends
Hi,
Well, Beta isn't doing a bad thing, really -- it looks like he's entering academics from Dublin U. en masse, together with their books. Assuming they're real -- Google seemed to think the first one was -- this isn't bad. Mind you, it isn't great, either, because he's only writing really tiny stubs. Still, encyclopedias are less quick to dismiss borderline academics than to dismiss, say, borderline musicians; by the nature of their work, scholars are just a bit more likely on average to exhibit encyclopedic merit. Go ahead and prod all those if you wish, because I hope it will get Beta to expand them. Don't be surprised, though, if they end up at AfD -- a real pain considering how many there are, but those are the costs of building an encyclopedia, I guess. Best wishes, Xoloz 00:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Or it would be great if you could expand the stubs, or at least those that are of interest to you. You can often find the titles of books written by academics by visiting the British Library's catalog at http://catalogue.bl.uk or the Library of Congress catalog at http://catalog.loc.gov and entering their names. Sometimes academics have their own web pages (usually part of the department where they teach) which include their CV and publications, both of which are useful background for an article. --TruthbringerToronto 02:44, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion
Regarding the article Orodruin (band), which you tagged for speedy deletion with the reason "it is an article about a band, singer, musician, or musical ensemble that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject", I wanted you to know that I have removed the speedy deletion tag. This article does not qualify for speedy deletion because the article states that the band toured Europe, which is an assertion of notability. If you still want the article to be deleted, please use the WP:AFD process. Thanks! Stifle (talk) 14:11, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New York State Legislature Marriage Positions
I would keep it and ask the editor who created it to provide references where possible. Once the legislation is voted on, the list can be updated with the actual votes. [edit] Manhattan (Cocktail)
I don't really understand the criteria for copying something to wikibooks, or the request to make an article "encyclopedic." Can you explain further? --The Yar 19:31, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comments on my talk page. I'm pretty familiar with the five pillars of WP and with Wikibooks. I wasn't really looking for links to those, I was interested in what your motives or intentions are, or why you think the article isn't encyclopedic. I'm also confused as to whether it's a move or a copy, because the suggestion states both. Such ambiguity makes me doubt the entire process.
- There's already a pretty decent module on wikibooks for making a manhattan cocktail. The article here in WP is not a recipe and is more intended as general information on its history and influence in culture, though it does contain a lot of information on ingredients and variations. It is very similar to the Martini article, though not as long. I'm going to remove your suggestion to [copy?|move? it isn't clear] until you can make a case on that article's discussion page. --The Yar 14:07, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Urban Dictionary
Hey, thanks for your message. I too assumed that urbandictionary has no standards at all, but according to the Wikipedia article about the site, they have quality control measures against things like spam, duplication, nonsense, ads, messages endorsing racism/sexism, so there are some minimal standards (no idea if these are actively policed though). So I went back and changed my phrasing to "fewer and lower" Bwithh 21:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Experimental Study Group
Why did you delete this? What does "NN club" (from your edit summary) mean? Michael Hardy 22:00, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- You put a tag there that said it's about a club, although it is not about a club, and saying further that it is non-notable, which I would dispute. If you think it should be deleted, you should nominated it in articles for deletion. Michael Hardy 22:39, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy tagging
Hi there, I have noticed some articles you have tagged today for speedy deletion citing the reason "Short article that hasn't been touched for a while speedy". That is not really a criterion for speedy deletion. If you read A1 on WP:SPEEDY, it reads "Limited content is not in itself a reason to delete if there is enough context to allow expansion." Thanks! --Aguerriero (talk) 22:14, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't agree. "Context" means "the parts of a discourse that surround a word or passage and can throw light on its meaning". It is obvious what this article is about, and someone could expand on it easily. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. :) --Aguerriero (talk) 22:37, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Why are you proposing that the DeFRaG and Challenge Pro Mode Arena articles be deleted, when they are not commercial software, and when WP:SOFTWARE is not even official policy? Especially the latter; Challenge Pro Mode Arena is certainly one of the largest mods available for Quake III, and is deserving of an article on Wikipedia. I have since removed the templates on both pages (as the template explicitly said that one could remove it if one had an objection, which I did), and I have made improvements to Challenge Pro Mode Arena. --Ryodox 20:54, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
PoE has won countless awards, is back by EA and Dice, is played by thousands and thousands of people, and has been featured in numerous magazine articles and Tech TV. The fact that you are crusading against these mods shows a lack of understanding and respect from you as well as makes sites like the Wiki less legit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.159.43.65 (talk • contribs)

Seems you've been a busy boy today eh? and it looks as though my Point of Existence modification isn't the only target you have lined up in your sights. typical attitude I'd expect from someone who claims video games to be 'evil'. I also fail to see how your argument for WP:SOFTWARE even applies to us so what's your problem with a small article about a free modification which took 3 and a half years of hard work to make? DrunkenPirate 01:33, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
Why are you setting out to cause trouble on the wiki? Do you have nothing better to do? I honestly think your page should be deleted for trolling looking to cause trouble on the Wiki. For a free information site, you sure do run around like the Gestapo looking to cause issues with sites that are legit and actually contribute which you certainly do not.
Have you read the article? If you did take the time to read this article you would see that this has taken a team of people a great deal of time to create. Have you visted thier website and seen how much work was put into the modification and effort into supporting a community of gamers, which I might add could have been directed here for information. I believe you will lose a great deal of people using your site due to your arrogance towards any game modifications which are free to anyone who has bought the game in question. It seems to me you are just picking on a group of talented people for no other reason then to cause a storm, is your life that void of drama? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.142.141.216 (talk • contribs)
why do you feel it nessercry to try delete the POE2 arical. what is so wrong with it? if you do there will be huge resentment, why cause so much hassel? i need to understand, why somone would bother. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PTGshogun (talk • contribs)
It doesn't matter how popular PoE2 or some other mods are. Unless those articles are vastly improved, I think they should be deleted. Unicyclopedia 05:48, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bad translation
Hi there; I knew, of course, that a bad translation is not a reason for deletion, although if, as in this case, the translation is so bad as to render the article only semi-comprehensible one might argue the point. My main reason for nomination is that the article is an essay, which is a valid reason for deletion.--Anthony.bradbury 13:19, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
- Whispering, is this unsigned tirade aimed at you or me?--Anthony.bradbury 12:59, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Hi there; I wasn't worrying about that tirade, just uncertain as to whether I needed to find out what they were talking about so as to answer it. Which of course I now won't. Had the author learnt enough about wiki to enable himself to insert his comment under the right heading I would not have had to ask. I notice that you have taken the trouble to move it into the right topic, which I feel shows true dedication!--Anthony.bradbury 13:27, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] adolescent medicine article
I noted a while ago that you raised concerns about the adolescent medicine article. I posted a reply at the copyright violations page, but at this time there is still a link to the adolescent medicine article. Please let me assure you that I wrote the article myself, and it is totally free-text. I did a fellowship in adolescent medicine, and everything I wrote is very basic information that anyone who works in the field could compose with little difficulty in a short time. I would like to have the copyright violations link removed. Please let me know if this is something that you feel requires further discussion; I will remove the link if I do not hear from you.

- I didn't know if I should reply to your comment on my usertalk page or not. (I don't really grasp the nuances of the Wiki experience, it seems.) The article is not original research, and everything I wrote is basic information in the field. Most of it could be found in a variety of different sources;the standard in medicine is that, if a fact is widely known and can be found in a variety of sources, specific citation is generally not indicated. Should anyone wish to verify the content of the article, the links provided already should yield sufficient verification.Drdannyu 18:44, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spleen
Ben,
I strongly protest your censorship of my spleen modifications and want to take this to a higher arbitrator not associated with Wikipedia. The modifications are pertinent to a high-profile current athlete who suffered a major operation to remove his spleen. The lack of sympathy or pertinence shown by the editors at Wikipedia is appalling.
Seriously, though--look at a great many of your "legitimate" entries. They are poorly written, structured or prioritized. Compare the entries for Britney Spears and Lionel Trilling. Who deserves the bigger entry in a purported encyclopedia of important knowledge? The entry for my alma mater, Northwestern University, is so poorly written that you couldn't even pin the writing on our engineering grads.
Here is where your democratic experiment truly fails. I'd take the Encyclopedia Britannica, whose erudite writers don't spend 8 hours a day watching television or reading US Weekly, any day of the week over Wikipedia. If you let the masses have their way, you'll likely get crap and enhanced entries for cliched subjects like Roseanne Barr, McDonald's or SEC football. Call me an elitist, but as the great literary critic Harold Bloom has written, "mediocrity breeds mediocrity".
So, to arbitrarily say that my modifications are inappropriate while allowing sentences like "Northwestern's athletic teams are nicknamed the Wildcats" strikes me as highly subjective blindness about something that clearly doesn't work -- much like George W. Bush with respect to the current quagmire in Iraq.
All the same, though I don't expect you to fully see the light, I hope I've given you the perspective of someone who is highly skeptical of the notion that Wikipedia and its ilk represent a way forward for humanity. I resolutely reject that notion, and I hope more intelligent people do too.

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!
Welcome, Whispering, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.
Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.
In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.
If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] I'm a dork
Yes I had done some vandalism, as I am a dork and wont do anymore, I probably just will stop editing. However can you tell me exactly what the deal is with wikipedia and encyclopedia dramatica??? I cannot get a straight answer out of anyone here! I created a page on them that had violated nothing, it was very short, explaining that they are a saterical site paroding wikiprojects (from the best I can tell) and they are often profane. I also included how there has been some sort of controversy with wikipedia and the dramatica but no factual information exists on the conflict becuz encyclopedia dramatica is satrical and therefore can't count on their information and wikipedia doesn't have any info on them whatsoever. What is going on? Why is encyclopedia dramatica akin to the word "mordor" that isn't even supposed to be uttered aloud in the shire? Whatever is going on it smells, and I've tried asking other people on here with no response. And my page got deleted with no info or reason, what is up??? Not to have a protected page with npov factual info on something becuase it is anti-wikipedia (is thats whats going on?) sounds really fishy to me - it really makes it appear that some admins ban things just becuz of a grudge or something - I have no idea, but I'd like to know whats going on.
Please answer me, I promise I will not be negative or a problem for wikipedia in any way, I'm just a sometimes dumb kid. Thank you in advance for a thorough response.
--- (Sorry, I'm a little confused as to where to respond so I'm posting here as well to your reply on my talk page)
Hmm, that is intersting. Its pretty obvious encyclopedia dramatica folks are in fact, well, idiots, but it does seem wikipedia isn't really fulfilling their purpose by treating all information on them like the word 'mordor' I can't really concieve of how it would be a problem to have a locked page on them, but its not like its really a big deal. However it is disapointing to see wikipedia be this way, wikipedia isn't truly living up to its own principles - not that I can really talk, or really care, I certaintly have marks against myself, but in an objective way this is a mark against wikipedia.
-In fact now that I think about it, it was wrong for my page on encyclopedia dramatica to get instantly deleted. It was NPOV and factual, just becuase it is a sore subjuct does not give an admin a right to delete it. This is totally what wikipedia is NOT, at least what its not supposed to be. I don't really care about encyclopedia dramatica, its the principle of the matter thats important. I need to pursue a grievence, however I suppose there is no such thing as it appears admins hold all this power. This is really weird. I know I was being a jerk and screweing around on some things before, but the more I'm learning and researching wikipedia the more I'm finding out you people are no better than the vandalism I was doing earlier. I don't really see the point of me taking the time to contribute anything if it can be arbitrally deleted at will just becuase some admin with no checks on their power feels that way.
[edit] Hello
I am not here to complain good sir.
However, I politely disagree with your notice for the page Tamriel Rebuilt
It is a fairly notable mod project for Elder Scrolls, and in fact, googling "Tamriel" will display the project's homepage over any other sites, even Bethesda's. I read this over and the context does not show any form of self-promotion whatsoever. (In accordance to your WP:SOFTWARE notice)
Anyhow, If I am wrong (and I may be) please tell me how I may improve the article, because I believe it would be better if it were kept instead of deleted.
Thanks :)
