From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
White Russians refers to the anti-Bolshevik Russians who opposed or fought against the Bolshevik forces during and after the October Revolution. What united "White Russians" was their opposition to Bolshevism. Contrary to popular belief, by no means all White Russians, including White Army officers, were pro-Tsarist. Many fled Soviet Russia after the defeat of the White forces in the Civil War. These emigres included members of the gentry, military officers, academicians and university graduates. They spread out across Europe, establishing large enclaves in Paris and Berlin. Many went to China, and others to the USA and Canada.
Note: White Russians are not to be confused with Belarusians, as the term "White Russian" has its own set of associations - in most cases indicating a more privileged background.
