Whetstone Gulf State Park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whetstone Gulf State Park is a state park located in Lewis County, New York in the USA. The park is on the border of the Towns of Turin and Martinsburg. The park is on the edge of the Tug Hill Plateau, south of Lowville.

The park is built in and around a three-mile-long canyon cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau.

The site is probably one of the most spectacular scenic vistas east of the Rocky Mountains.

The park has 56 wooded campsites, a scenic picnic area along Whetstone Creek, a man-made swimming area and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, one of which circles the gorge.

Above the gorge is Whetstone Reservoir, stocked with tiger muskie and large-mouth bass for fishermen.

The east end of the park is located by New York State Route 26.

The park offers a beach, a playground, picnic tables and pavilions, hiking, fishing, a campground with tent and trailer sites, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
