"When the Stars Go Blue" is a popular alternative country song initially composed and performed by solo artist and former Whiskeytown band member (1994–1999), Ryan Adams. It was first released with his album Gold on September 25, 2001.

The song was subsequently performed by The Corrs on their album VH1 Presents: The Corrs, Live In Dublin in 2002, featuring U2's Bono. The group and Bono did another cover of the song during the Edinburgh Live 8 Concert in July 2005, and was released as a single in Spain from their album Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection during 2007, reaching #1 in September. It was also performed on May 6, 2004, by pop-rocker Cary Pierce at Schubas Tavern in Chicago, Illinois, for his EP Cary Pierce Live at Schubas, and yet again in 2005 by artists Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Lenz, as featured on One Tree Hill.

In 2006, the song was released by Tim McGraw on his album Tim McGraw Reflected: Greatest Hits Vol. 2, with added country-style and more instrumental aid.

Phil Lesh & Friends played "When the Stars Go Blue" at 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, on July 21, 2006. Because Phil Lesh supports free trading of his audience recorded live shows, this show and the track are available at archive.org (direct links provided below).

The song (Adams' version) was played in an episode of the TV series ER (season 13, episode 9).

Venke Knutson, a Norwegian singer, recorded a cover of this song on her album Places I Have Been with Norwegian Idol and World Idol winner Kurt Nilsen. It was released as a single in 2006.

The song was also the opening and closing music for the audiobook of Lisey's Story by Stephen King.

Blake Lewis performed the song (credited as Tim McGraw's) on April 17, 2007 on the sixth season of American Idol. Its studio version was released on the American Idol official website and later included on his Blake Lewis - EP, as well as in the American Idol Season 6: The Collector's Edition, the compilation of the studio versions of song performed by the finalists of Idol.

"When the Stars Go Blue" is also included on the complilation album Hear Music Volume 7: Waking.

The song was also covered by Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Galeotti during season 2 of One Tree Hill. Acknowlogment was given to Ryan Adams as the owner of the song in Ep 219.
