Wheat City Journal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wheat City Journal is a weekly community newspaper printed in Brandon, Manitoba. Its founder and former publisher is Bruce Penton. It is now in its sixth year of providing Brandon-based, people-oriented news and sports. General manager Niomie Cummings along with new editor Brent Fitzpatrick have steered the newspaper towards larger pictures and a unique feature focus. Reporters Carrie Simmons and Lanny Stewart not only cover local news and sports events, but aim to provide the Wheat City with in-depth glances into the lives of people within the community. Taking a new approach to news and sports reporting is part of what the newspaper is all about. The Journal team also consists of production experts Lorraine Dillabough and Chris Noto, who give the paper its visual flair. Sales associates Tom Wenham, Melissa Dohan and Chad Fouillard are responsible for the array of advertisements within the pages of the Journal that let Brandonites know about local businesses and events. Receptionist Darlene Duncan and distribution manager There's Turner, as well as contributors such as Ron Petrie, John LoRegio, Frank McGwire, Tyler Crayston, Craig George, Stephen Groves and others, are essential members of the Journal's staff. What makes the Wheat City Journal unique? With free distribution to homes throughout the city, Brandon's newest paper is easily accessible for all. The Journal, published weekly, doesn't just provide news and sports facts. The local, personal focus of the paper brings the reader in close to provide intimate snapshots of the lives of people residing in the community. Rather than competing with daily newspapers, the Journal creates a complementary alternative: a smooth blend of features, news, sports and photography, all with the intimate focus that makes the paper special. With everything from stories about Brandonites restoring cars to the original Big Brother pairing in the city, the Journal aims to provide something for everyone.
The paper's first issue was released on April 25, 2002. In 2004, the Wheat City Journal was purchased by Glacier Venture International.
