What Next? is the only opera to date by Elliott Carter. The libretto is by Paul Griffiths. It was written in 1997-8 on a commission from Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and premiered there in a concert performance conducted by Daniel Barenboim in 1999. The staged premiere was in July, 2006 at the Tanglewood Music Festival under James Levine.[1]
