What Mattered Most is the debut album of American country music artist Ty Herndon. The album's title track, which was Ty's debut single, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in 1995. Other singles from the album were "I Want My Goodbye Back", "Heart Half Empty", and "In Your Face". A duet with Stephanie Bentley, "Heart Half Empty" would later be included on her 1996 album Hopechest.
The track "You Just Get One" was later cut by Jeff Wood, who would release it as a single on his 1997 album Between the Earth and the Stars. "Summer was a Bummer" would later be recorded by Wade Hayes on his 1998 album When the Wrong One Loves You Right. Also, "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" is a cover of a single released by Jim Croce in 1972.
