[edit] Wichita (tribe)
I think if you'll check you will find that the Witchitas were more often called Pawnee Picts than Panis Piques—in reference to their tattoos (see Pict) and the fact that in early times they were first identified as a branch of the Pawnees, another Caddoan speaking tribe from the eastern Great Plains. They were not a Southern tribe, but from the Soutern Plains portion of the Southwest United States. See Five Civilized Tribes for the Southern Indians relocated to Oklahoma. For a citation see Wheelock, T.B., "Journal of Col. Dodge's Expedition from Ft. Gibson to Pawnee Pict Village." American State Papers, Class V, Military Affairs, (Washington, 1860) , pp. 373-382. —Janitor 21:17, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- A further note: Col. Dodge's expedition in 1834 was the first American contact with the Plains Indians (Devil's Canyon (Oklahoma)). —Janitor 21:26, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
