[edit] History
WGXA began broadcasting on April 21, 1982 as an ABC affiliate, the last of the "Big 3" network affiliate stations in Middle Georgia after WMAZ-TV & WCWB-TV. Prior to that time, ABC programming was only available to area residents either during the off-network hours (via tape delay) on WMAZ or on affiliates from nearby markets, such as Atlanta's WSB-TV or Columbus' WTVM. Within a few months, it surged to second place behind WMAZ, largely because its news product was far more modern than that of WCWB (now WMGT-TV). For a brief time in the 1990's, the early evening newscast was repeated at 10pm on WGMN-TV channel 64.
During its years as an ABC affiliate, WGXA preempted various network news programs -- the Saturday and Sunday editions of World News Tonight (instead showing syndicated reruns of various shows), ABC World News This Morning (instead showing cartoons), and even Nightline (instead showing The Arsenio Hall Show) and This Week With David Brinkley.
When NFL Football broadcasts moved from NBC to FOX in the early 1990's, WGXA aired the FOX network's NFL broadcasts on Sunday afternoons until WPGA-TV signed on the air as the area's first FOX broadcasting affiliate in 1995.
WGXA and WPGA-TV swapped affiliations on New Year's Day 1996, with WGXA joining Fox and WPGA becoming ABC.
[edit] Programming
Being a Fox affiliate, WGXA airs Fox network programming for prime time between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00 PM. WGXA airs syndicated shows in the mornings and afternoons and after the 10:00 PM newscast. On Saturday, January 5, 2008; WGXA began airing a weekend newscast at 10 p.m.
