WGNT Radio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WGNT (930 AM) is a radio station based in Huntington, West Virginia.

[edit] Overview

It was founded in 1923 as WSAZ at 1160 AM with 50 watts of power. During the twenties and thirties, the station resided at various locations in the tri-state (Ohio/West Virginia/Kentucky) area, finally settling into Huntington. After several power boosts over the years, WSAZ broadcast with 1,000 watts both day and night in 1934. In March, 1941, the frequency finally settled at 930 kilocycles.

When Thomas S. Stoner's Stoner Broadcasting System Inc. purchased WSAZ in May 1970, a month later, Stoner changed the call letters from WSAZ to WGNT. In 1988, Stoner sold the station to Tom Wolf and the Fifth Avenue Broadcasting System.

Today the station is still at 930 AM, now known as WRVC, with 5,000 watts days and 1,000 watts nights, on-air 24 hours a day. It may be West Virginia's oldest continuously licensed AM broadcast station.[citation needed] As of April, 2008, it is affiliated with ESPN Sports radio.
