A beer named after the area – Westoe IPA - is brewed by the Jarrow Brewing Company. Westoe had its own brewery until the 1960s and a new micro-brewery situated in the Maltings pub in South Shields has been named after it.

Catherine Cookson was no stranger to Westoe in her youth and was the backdrop for a number of her romance novels.

Dame Flora Robson[3] was a well known actress and was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Saratoga Trunk.

Sir William Fox[4] was the premier for New Zealand three times; four if you count the time he held the post in a caretaker capacity.

Elinor Brent-Dyer[5] was a famous author. She was born in South Shields and attended school in Westoe. Among her novels were the 58 in the Chalet series.
