[edit] History

Westfield was founded on May 6, 1834 by Asa Bales, Ambrose Osborne and Simon Moon, all Quakers from North Carolina. See "Plat of the Town of Westfield" page 121 at the Old Hamilton Co. Court House, "History of Hamilton Co. Illustrated 1880" page 136 and "Primitive History of Hamilton Co. 1901" by Augustus Finch Shirts pages 261. It is believed that the town was planned as a stop on the Underground Railroad with many families of the Quaker and Wesleyan Methodist churches supporting the cause. When the laws against aiding escaped slaves were harshened, part of the Westfield Quakers split into the Anti-Slavery Friends meeting. [2]
