Western Victoria Region, Victoria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western Victoria Region electoral district should not be confused with the more general term Western District, which describes parts of the same area.

The electoral district of Western Victoria Region is one of eight new electoral divisions of the state of Victoria, Australia, each of which elects five members to the upper house of the Parliament of Victoria, the Victorian Legislative Council, by proportional representation. It was created in 2006 following the reform of the Legislative Council by the Australian Labor Party state government of Steve Bracks. It comprises the Legislative Assembly districts of Ballarat East, Ballarat West, Bellarine, Geelong, Lara, Lowan, Melton, Polwarth, Ripon, South Barwon and South-West Coast.

Western Victoria Region first elected members at the 25 November 2006 state election. The Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party won two seats each, and the Democratic Labor Party won the final seat with the support of many preferences.
