The Western Courier is a collegiate newspaper that serves more than 14,000 students, faculty, and staff at Western Illinois University, publishing each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the academic year, excluding holidays and breaks. Summer publication is on Thursdays. The Western Courier is the only officially recognized student newspaper on campus and is distributed free at 80 locations throughout the campus (including residence halls) and throughout the Macomb, Illinois business community.

In 2005, The Western Courier won 16 awards from the Illinois College Press Association for writing, design, and photography. The Courier won first place awards for in-depth reporting, critical review (music), headline writing, non-sports column, and editorial writing. Other awards included third place awards for critical film review and graphic illustration as well as honorable mentions for special supplement, opinion page design, editorial writing, feature page design, column excluding sports, sports page design, sports news story, general news photo, and feature photo.
The Western Courier student-run newspaper was inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame in May 1999.
