The West Side (An Taobh Siar in Scottish Gaelic) is the name used for the townships which lie on the Isle of Lewis between Dell in Ness and Shawbost in the south.
One road, the A858 serves nearly all of the communities, which are predominantly Gaelic-speaking.
The villages on the West Side are as follows: (From the north most village) Galson ,Melbost, Borve, Shader, Barvas, then Brue , Arnol, Bragar, Shawbost,. No matter how small these villages are, the community are very close and stick together. This is one of the prominent features of not only the West Side, but Lewis itself.
