West Johnston High School was established in the 2002-2003 school year due to crowding and growth problems in other local high schools. The first graduating class was in 2004. Dr. Patricia Harris led the school for its first 4 years and helped the school try and build its reputation as one of the top high schools in the state. In 2006-2007, Mrs. Brookie Honeycutt took the helm of the school. The school has achieved moderate success on the academic realm while struggling to maintain success on the athletic fields. However, 2007 is by far the best season the football team has ever experienced, as they are currently 7-4, and 6-1 in the Greater Neuse River Conference.
The team forfeited a 48-20 win over Overhills due to an ineligible player's appearance.
There is an exquisite band program, headed by Lance Britt. In fact the WJHS band has been invited to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade '08. The band has competed in many local and national events competing in the Bands of America Grand Nationals and placing 15 of approximately 90 competing bands from across the country. The band was also chosen to represent the state and march in the 2005 inaugural parade for President George W. Bush
