[edit] Overview

West Exe Technology College is one of the five secondary schools in Exeter. West Exe (Previously known as St Thomas High) has become a favourite school placement in Exeter due to its convenient location and its popularity. There is a catchment area for education in the school: the St Thomas area, Alphington, and some parts of Exwick. Exwick is the most difficult and confusing location for West Exe because a few of the other schools' catchment areas are around here too.

Its executive head-teacher is Mr Steve Maddern; Assistant head-teachers are Mrs Julia Green, Mrs Beverly Childs, Mr Rick Jolly, and Mr Andrew Till.

As of 2006, the new building was ready (the old building being knocked down due to inconvenient spacing, and lack of sources required for each subject). The new building has many new features and is by far better than the older building - better storage, ICT facilities, science labs etc. It's also more aesthetically pleasing (as students had constantly commented) and it's also easier to get around.

[edit] Problems

West Exe has had slight problems with the new building, such as the gas leak; which was caused by a piercing in a gas pipe. The alarms didn't go off due to slight electrical faults but emergency services arrived shortly after evacuation. The students and some staff were dismissed due to cooking appliances not working: the pierce in the pipe.

Another problem includes the heating: the temperature soared to over 30C. This caused constant tiredness amongst staff and pupils, but also made them rather ill. The air conditioning system has had a check and has been repaired. Also, reflective windows have been installed in order to cool the temperatures a bit. However, some windows in the school still are unable to open, causing un-doubt heat and stress throughout the day.

[edit] Events throughout 2008

Events throughout West Exe this year, include Whole School Learning days, where students participate in activities such as Team-building, Problem Solving, Mind Developing and fun educational activities. Other events include the Gala Conert on the 20th May which featured the West Exe Jazz Band, a string quartet and a Samba Band. The Gala Conert raised over £500 for Malawi. Bike IT week also was a great hit, including more pupils riding there bike to school, Bike safety lessons and Bike agility courses.

Throughout this year, students at West Exe have been trying to raise £10,000 to help build a school in Malawi, with help from the David James Foundation. Fundraising included Donation days, Malawi week, Bike donation, Gala Concert and the new West Exe single, "Another Brick in the Wall". On the 11th June 2008, the total money raised for Malawi is £10,036.56.
