West Dean Rural District

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

West Dean was a rural district in Gloucestershire, England from 1894 to 1974.

It was formed from the part of the Monmouth rural sanitary district that was in Gloucestershire (the rest, in Monmouthshire becoming part of Monmouth Rural District). It originally consisted of the parishes of West Dean, English Bicknor, Newland and Staunton.

In 1935, under a County Review Order, the urban districts of Awre and Coleford were abolished and incorporated as parishes into the rural district. It also took in parts of parishes from the East Dean and United Parishes Rural District which was being disbanded.

The district survived until 1974, when, under the Local Government Act 1972, it was merged to form part of the Forest of Dean district.
