[edit] Welcome
Welcome!
Hello, West one girl, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Tutorial
- How to edit a page
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}}
before the question. Again, welcome! GBT/C 14:59, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- No the one called "Statue of King Charles II" - it leaves a lot of blank space in the text. Also, all the images are on the right (apart from the one on the left you just left above). This makes it all a bit messy. Excuse if this violates some policy about images. (Your talk page seems very abusive by the way, sorry if I have caught you on a bad day, it can wait).West one girl (talk) 15:20, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

- That's fine - just a troll who's upset that I tagged his article for deletion. It happens (a lot, if you regularly patrol the new articles weeding out the nonsense).
- Are you sure about the picture? It looks fine to me when I look at it in my browser, and it and all the other images are on the right (bar Oscar Wilde's House). It could be that it's actually Oscar Wilde creating the problem - I've moved it to the right - does that look better to you? GBT/C 15:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

- OK sounds like it's my browser or screen (I have a wide screen laptop which sometimes screws things up. Don't worry. I am struggling with uploading some of my Chelsea pics - seems like you have to create an account in another place first then upload, awfully confusing. - You shouldn't have to - if the image is your own work, and you're happy to let it be used on other websites, and not just the English Wikipedia, then you can upload it at Wikipedia Commons. Otherwise you're already logged in here, so you can just go to Wikipedia:Upload and choose the "It is entirely my own work" link, and work your way through that.

- A couple of other pointers - don't forget to sign your posts (by leaving four tildes (~) at the end of your message), as this makes it easier to see who said what - it is possible to track it through the edit history, but it's a little more complicated. If you don't, there is a little robot that runs around signing posts that people forgot to sign themselves, but it'll tell you off if it catches you doing it.

- Also, you've probably noticed that you get a "You have a new message" bar when someone leaves you a message - generally speaking if someone leaves you a message, the best place to reply is on their talk page, as they then get the notification. I realise it splits the conversation into two different places, which some people don't like, but it makes it easier to know when someone's replied. In this case I've used the watchlist feature to watch your page, so I can see more easily when you've replied.

[edit] Images
So, judging by your userpage you've got to the bit about captions, and aligning things on the left or right, then! There's a thing called a sandbox, you know, which is where you can play about with stuff? It's a little better for experimentation, and often people use it to create an article before posting it to the main article space. There's a global sandbox at Wikipedia:Sandbox, or you can have your own (which, by consensus, other people won't edit). Yours would be at User:West_one_girl/Sandbox - notice the / which means it's a sub-page of your user page. You can have as many as you like, as long as they're differently named (ie. User:West_one_girl/Sandbox 1, User:West_one_girl/Sandbox 2, etc. GBT/C 19:24, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- PS - The links are showing up as red because the pages don't exist yet... GBT/C 19:25, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. Er, a bit frustrating, as you can see. West one girl (talk) 19:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

-
- Well I just wanted to get the Cheyne walk image I found to appear on the right, rather than the left. As you can see, I put the word 'right' in there, but it keeps coming back at me on the left. West one girl (talk) 19:30, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your talk page...
...picked up a bit of vandalism earlier - judging by their username you were targeted by association, so apologies for that! Another user reverted the vandalism, so you would probably have seen a "You have a new message" box without actually seeing any new message. GBT/C 11:01, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you! As you see, I am progressing with the user box thing. West one girl (talk) 11:02, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:280px-Apsley House - Napoleons statue enhanced.jpg
Thank you for uploading Image:280px-Apsley House - Napoleons statue enhanced.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 16:15, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- done. West one girl (talk) 17:06, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- Erm, he won't hear you - User:STBotI isn't a person, it's a bot - bots are little computer programs that have an account, a talk page, and all the usual, and run around doing house-keeping tasks, like nagging people about remembering to sign posts on talk pages, telling people when pages they'd created had been flagged for deletion, and things like that! Click on his name (it's linked to his userpage) and it'll tell you what he does. GBT/C 17:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thank you! Stupid me. But I did do what 'he' requested. I keep forgetting to put the copyright/copyleft tag when I upload an image. I promise you I am a little better at editing in general than I am struggling with the software here (not very user friendly, sorry). If you have time, have a look at the articles I have edited. I made considerable changes to the Knightsbridge article introduction. If you follow my edits it should be obvious what I have done. Also started a new article on St. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge - can't believe it doesn't already exist, though I did check as best I could. Finally, I uploaded as my work, when in reality it is something I took from the web then modified (by colouring in the Knightsbridge part). Not sure whether this is correct or not. Let me know, otherwise I'll keep on going. West one girl (talk) 18:02, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

- The changes to Knightsbridge look good - and in case you haven't spotted it, there's an easy way to see changes someone's made. Click on the "history" tab at the top, and it shows you all the edits to the article. There are two rows of dots down the left - leave the one on the right on the very top edit, but click on the left alongside the edit before your first edit (by MRSC). Then click on the button saying "Compare selected versions" and you should see something like this - that shows you the net effect of all the changes you made rolled into one. I agree that the software can be a bit clunky, but once you get used to it you'll find lots of useful little things!

- On the map, I suspect it's a bit iffy - it looks like a Google map (given the arrow), so I suspect they own the copyright - that you modified it makes little difference, as you don't have the right to take their work, change it, then upload it here under the terms of the GFDL license. Some people do make maps for Wikipedia - have a wander over to this page and follow your nose if you want someone to make a map for you! GBT/C 18:19, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- You are SO KIND. Thank you. Yes you are right I coloured in a Google map. I'll try to sort it out as you suggested when I get back to my computer next weekend (in Scotland for most of the week). West one girl (talk) 20:48, 10 February 2008

[edit] Hello
Thank you for your kind comments on my Talk page; please feel free to plagarise as much as you like! You might also like this User page: Wetman. I have to admit that I'm not very interested in pop music, but the old Welsh crooners do tickle my taste-buds, especially on long car journeys when I can join in!
Oddly enough, my User page has never been vandalised; I think that perhaps my controversial User box is so carefully drafted that, if you are a bear of very little brain, it might be a bit difficult to work out whether I'm pro or anti (the same sort of people who think that Jonathan Swift is advocating baby-eating). (Actually, I'm pro, largely on the grounds of toleration and because I once saw a fox shot 11 times with shotguns, before someone finally manged to grab it and wring its neck. This is promoted by the ignorant as the humane alternative to foxhunting.)
I'm afraid that my friend Kittybrewster seems to have given up WP as a New Year's resolution; he had a particularly bruising time on here last year, and, as he's not well in real life, I think that he's probably given it up. I do hope that you may be able to lure him back.
I don't know if you are a fan of Auberon Waugh, but if you haven't come across him, his old Private Eye 'diary' was hilarious. You can buy second-hand copies on Amazon (it's out of print). The picture on my User page was by Cornelis van Haarlem, if you want to follow the link, but I'm also a fan of Melchior d'Hondecoeter, amongst others.
Good luck - I hope that you have an enjoyable time editing. You'll find that WP attracts all sorts; good, bad, trouble-makers, the ignorant; it's best to smile sweetly and keep on ploughing your own furrow without descending to reciprocal abuse. If you have any problems, do drop by again - I see GB is doing a good job of pointing you in the right direction.--Major Bonkers (talk) 12:39, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hello again! I notice that Kittybrewster is editing again on Wikipedia, and if you ask him nicely will, I'm sure, smarten up your User Page (although you seem to have done a good job yourself). Would you like me to set up an archive for your Talk page (ie. this page)? If you leave it for too long you end up with a huge long list of topics that takes ages to load. An archive doesn't delete the Talk page, it just moves the correspondence to a separate page (have a look at mine - you can access it through my Talk page - to get an idea).
- One thing you might like to think about is setting up a sub-page to work on new articles without interference. I have one on rat-eating here, for example, but you can set one up easily enough by following the same format: NB - use 'West one girl' rather than 'Major Bonkers'! Trust you are well. --Major Bonkers (talk) 13:55, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- Thank you for yours; I've set up the archive for you; at some stage within the next week it should automatically take all your old messages (defined as any sections which have lain idle for over a week) and put them in your archive, at which stage the red section in the header, at the top of this page, should turn blue.
-
- By the way, I see that you are interested in fashion - do you know where I might get one of those (rather vulgar - but that's the way I am!) union jack coats? I'd rather fancy one in red, white, and blue velvet as a smoking jacket. I imagine that there's a tailor out there who can make them.
-
- I'm afraid that my sub-page is a bit ugly and disorganised at the moment, but at least it keeps things away from the risk of being 'nominated for deletion'! --Major Bonkers (talk) 07:42, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- I'm afraid that I've had to fiddle around with the archiving code (sorry!); it should work in another week's time. (PS - your initials are rather strange.)--Major Bonkers (talk) 10:24, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- I've had another go at your archive; it should work now, and this is a much better arrangement (if it works)! If you're a bit bored or browned off, why not have a look over here.--Major Bonkers (talk) 13:08, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Top Gear (Kings Road)
An editor has nominated Top Gear (Kings Road), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Top Gear (Kings Road) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 18:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Three weeks later...
...and I see that one of your articles has gone to, but survived, the Articles for Deletion process. How's it all going? GBT/C 22:38, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- I was thinking I must thank you again for your help earlier. Yes, it was up for deletion, and survived (largely because someone else helped add some useful things that proved what a good article it was going to be! I did somewhat better on Granny Takes a Trip I think. Thanks again. West one girl (talk) 19:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

- You're quite right. There is a very good reason, but ideally you need to have email enabled for me to be able to tell you...all part of the reason! It doesn't involve your disclosing your email address to me, as I'll be able to send you an email directly from the site without ever knowing what your address was, then you could reply in the same way (when you're on a user's page, there's an option on the left to "E-mail this user"). If you click on "My preferences", you should see an email confirmation option. Let me know when you've confirmed your email and I'll drop you a line with a (long-winded, but very sensible) explanation! GBT/C 20:10, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks, I understand why you that happened now. I have turned the email off now, as a bit concerned - when I joined you said it OK and safe, now you say there are serial killers or whatever stalking one's every move, and I have rather given away my general address (not W1 obviously but the photos and stuff I am uploading rather give it away). Are you sure it OK here? West one girl (talk) 11:50, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Oreskes
Hi West one girl,
Thanks for your note. Are you asking how my article on Wikipedia is going? Or the Oreskes page?
I find Wikipedia baffling. Do you know how many editors there are, and how often disputes like mine with Tabletop occur?

[edit] Bonsoir...
Thanks for the message - have dropped your new-found friend a message on his talk page to see if there's anything I can help with. Looks like he was edit warring over a page and it ended up getting protected. No mad panic - can all be undone and sorted out. How's tricks? GBT/C 19:18, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- Tricks are fine - the 'accident' bit was a joke by the way! I haven't had much time to do work here, I actually got some real life work last month. Best West one girl (talk) 18:26, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your help, Kate. This is quite an adventure. Lawrence Solomon (talk) 06:21, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
