To what extent will this project take on "alternative rock" from before there was an "Alternative Rock"? I'd probably have a lot more to write about The Velvet Underground, the 13th Floor Elevators, or early Jonathan Richman than about Pearl Jam and Blink 182, especially because with some historical distance we can actually now say something reasonably definitive about where they fit the history of popular music. -- Jmabel | Talk 20:02, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

The intention is to cover genres, bands, and concepts classified as alternative rock, ie. grunge, gothic rock, indie rock, Britpop, Shoegazing, and so forth. So really nothing before the late 70's early 80s when the first alternative bands start forming. However, given that there might be areas of rock music that might not be adequately covered by other Wikiprojects or ignored in the shuffle (subjects ranging from post-punk to The Deviants to, yes, even Mr. Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers), those can certainly be brought to the attention of fellow editors here and possibly set aside in a separate section on this page until another Wikiproject (if any) arises that might better address these subjects. Even though I designed this to address alternative rock (basically the underground rock scene and its mainstream presence since the punk rock explosion), the same sort of people interested in editing articles on Sonic Youth, Steve Albini, The Cure, and Belle & Sebastian would probably also be interested in helping out on Joy Division, Iggy Pop, or Krautrock, even if those topics aren't technically covered by the scope of this project.
So basically the main focus is the alternative/indie rock movement since the 1980s, but feel free to flag up any underground/obscure music article that needs any help on the Talk Page. WesleyDodds 12:58, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
In short, the focus is "Alternative Rock", but other alternative rock might sneak in. - Jmabel | Talk 20:08, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, especially if any particular article is in desperate need of attention. WesleyDodds 20:27, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
If it's not too late, why not rename it to broaden its scope. --Osbus 00:06, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Because the alternative rock as a genre is really something that hasn't been given comprehensive attention. Really, no books have been written on the subject as a whole. Sure, we could focus on underground music asn an overarching subject, but what I wanted to do was focus on this strange genre people have trouble agreeing on, both in the mainstream and underground. Good point...we need more members though. If you want, I can put messages in the CBB, Wikizine, Vp, etc. --Osbus 13:38, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
