[edit] Merger with Westinghouse Electric
Someone proposed that this be merged with Westinghouse Electric.
- No, this company has nothing to do with Westinghouse Electric except that they license the name from them. Operations are completely separate -- the only connection is the trademark. Jkatzen 05:35, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- IN fact if anything this should make the difference between the two clear.cmacd 13:26, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I still don't get it.!! :)
They use the same logo and everything... there has to be more of a connection then what it says here.
- No, there really, really isn't. Westinghouse Digital Electronics uses the logo because they licensed it from Westinghouse Electric. Kind of like McDonald's is not affiliated with Marvel Comics even if they print Spiderman on their Happy Meals.
- Westinghouse Electric is a licensing company that exists to market the trademark to companies that wish to gain the advantage of using the brand of a historic internaltional company. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.121.53.111 (talk) 15:41, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Licensing is not new. In fact, it is a common practice in many countries. Terms and conditions vary. So any company, any size can pay a mutually agreeable fee to use the name. In the case of a one time fee, it is called sales. The famous example is IBM licensed/sold their PC division to a Chinese company. Later on they changed the name to Lenovo. In this case, I think Westinghouse licensed its name (may include the logo, technologies and possibly inventories) to the new owner.
Perhaps the confusion people experience is the identity and expectation of the name. Most people expect Westinghouse name to represent a local, US based company with a local history. Think about it. A lot of the US companies these days are outsourcing their production to China. The key is quality and trust. Customers cannot automatically assume certain name or logo represent quality. Quality depends on the whole food chain.John Koon (talk) 22:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] History?
Who were they before? What did they make before licensing the name? cached Google page seems to indicate that the company is a tiny front company to resell Chi Mei Optoelectronics LCD TVs ... someone who's got the time to do some research could flesh this out... (Similar to how eMachines started out as a front company to package and sell TriGem PC's with some other brand of Korean CRT monitors)
