Talk:West Point (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A good number of pages which should be linked to United States Military Academy are being linked here instead. This contents of this page should be moved to West Point, New York and the disambiguation should be moved to West Point (disambiguation). The page itself should be a redirect to United States Military Academy. --Jiang 08:54 14 Jul 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Requested Move

West Point is a common place name in the world. Currently, West Point links to United States Military Academy. It is quite hard to sort out disambiguation. Places like West Point, New York are mistakenly link to United States Military Academy without attention. It would be better to move West Point (disambiguation) back to West Point. • Support. The disambiguation page should be at West Point, which has few incoming links anyway, many of which want other West Points. Kusma (討論) 22:02, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose See WP:NC: Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature. --Philip Baird Shearer 01:27, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
  • OpposeThere may be many other West Points, but the VAST majority of people will be searching for United States Military Academy, the only one which is world-famous.Dr U 02:37, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Bill 02:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Dr U and Philip Baird Shearer, when most people in the english-speaking world (and others, too) say "West Point", they mean the USMA --rogerd 02:19, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose bad idea Bubba likes it 02:48, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The solution to links pointing to the wrong place is to fix the links, not to rename the target article. Tomertalk 06:51, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
    • I have just fixed most of the incoming links; about half of them wanted Sai Wan (which is West Point, Hong Kong), all the others wanted the military academy. Maybe Hong Kong is the only place where West Point does not mean the USMA. Kusma (討論) 11:12, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm sure there are other West Points elsewhere, as well as a few West Ends, but by far the most frequent usage in the US and internationally is in reference to the US Military Academy. I realize you went through and fixed links that were pointing to the wrong place, but that's just one of the chores incumbent upon us as responsible editors. I have to do the same thing every few days for Special:Whatlinkshere/Hebrew (and yes, I'm behind a bit ;-).) Tomertalk 11:30, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
