Talk:West Los Angeles

[edit] Disambiguation necessary
As a lifelong Los Angeleno, I would have to argue that the overwhelming usage of "West Los Angeles" is to indicate the district, and not the region, which is invariably the "West Side". A more appropriate name might be "West Side Los Angeles", or even "Western Los Angeles". Any thoughts on this (especially from those with renaming privileges)?
- I definitely agree. I'll rename the page once I figure out how (I'm having trouble understanding which "what links here" links I'd have to change and which would be OK - never renamed a page before). EmergentProperty 06:07, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

- I agree about the name, but please proceed cautiously in this matter (page renames are hard to undo). This instance is trickier than it looks, partly due to general prinicples on handling articles on places. One of the problems here is that we should have an article on the district of L.A. called "WLA" and we should also have an article about the region, the "Westside" (which generally includes WLA, Rancho Park, and other LA districts plus other cities and county lands). I have rarely heard locals refer to "Western Los Angeles". So the logical name following the naming conventions might be Westside, California but that is not clear by itself. Maybe Los Angeles Westside, California? Here are Google results, which indicate that to be somewhat more popular than the inverse.
- 27,400 for "Los Angeles Westside"
- 4,110 for "Los Angeles West Side"
- 11,500 for "Westside Los Angeles"
- 1,760 for "West Side Los Angeles"
- 14,700 for "Western Los Angeles"
- As for the content, the regional article can be a bit of a stub/overview as every district or city included should already have an article of its own. Most of the content should go to the district article, including the ethnic info focused on Westwood, etc. The Sawtelle info should go into an article of its own. We can start by splitting the article content on the page. And lastly we'll need to check the articles that link here and make sure they are linked to the right article. - It seems to me that most of the info here should stay on a page for the region (Westside). Westwood already has a decent page that we can move stuff to. Sawtelle has a page too - but it claims that the name only refers to the federal land there, so that's another thing to fix. As for a district page for West Los Angeles - this page already has that name so we can leave it as a stub after the move (and check linking articles to be sure they go to the right place, as you mentioned).

- How does the redirect work? When I search for "Los Angeles Westside" it already takes me here - I don't know how that works or what would happen after moving this to a page with that title. Also I don't know what a "double redirect" is that I'm supposed to watch out for when moving a page. Also, according to the instructions I found for moving a page, the "West Los Angeles" page will automatically become a redirect to whatever new page I move it to, which would not be desirable since we want to have a separate page with that title. How do you make and edit redirects? EmergentProperty 23:28, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

- What I'd recommed doing is going into edit mode in the article, copying all the marked-up text, clicking on the red-link for Los Angeles Westside, California to start editing it, then paste the text in. With the two pages in edit mode sort out which text should be where (Sawtelle can get worked out later). The correct category for the W.L.A article is Category: Los Angeles neighborhoods, and for the region it's Category:Los Angeles County regions. Save the articles, then go to the "what links here" button and check each link to see if it is pointing to the intended article. A double redirect occurs when a redirect points to another redirect. The software gives up at that point and leaves the reader at a redirect page. They can be fixed by linking the last redirect directly to the ultimate article. (Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Nice work on the Wiliams article.) Cheers, -Willmcw 04:37, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

- OK I'm going to do it - thanks for the help. Thanks also for the compliment on the "Wiliams article", but I'm not sure what you're talking about :) EmergentProperty 18:31, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

- Alright I conducted the split. Upon review of the text I found that nothing refered to the neighborhood (West LA) except the sentence in the first paragraph. I moved the rest to Los Angeles Westside. I'll be checking links from other pages today, and I'll make Los Angeles Westside, California into a redirect. EmergentProperty 20:08, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
