West Virginia (named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen) and was part of Virginia until President Lincoln issued a proclamation admitting West Virginia into the Union at the end of sixty days (June 20, 1863) effectively creating the state.
The ancient mound builder's are some of the first inhabitants of what is now West Virginia. In 1671, General Abram Wood, at the direction of Royal Governor William Berkeley of the Virginia Colony, sent a party which discovered Kanawha Falls. In 1725 German settlers from Pennsylvania founded New Mecklenburg, the present Shepherdstown, on the Potomac River.

Huntington is a city located in the U.S. State of West Virginia along the Ohio River. Most of the city is in Cabell County, for which it is the county seat of government. A small portion of the city, mainly the neighborhood of Westmoreland, is in Wayne County. As of 2006, current data shows a city population of 49,007[1]. Huntington is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of current 2005 data, the MSA's population was 286,012.
