This map shows the estimated penetration of West German terrestrial television into East Germany during the Cold War for the first West German national channel ARD.

light grey: Reception possible

black: No reception

green: Transmitter sites of channel ARD closest to the border

Satirical names for the areas without western reception included:

  • "Tal der Ahnungslosen" ("Valley of the Clueless")
  • "Außer Raum Dresden" ("Except Region Dresden") or "Außer Rügen und Dresden" ("Except Rügen and Dresden"), puns on ARD
