[edit] Summary
Description: West Avenal, a cargo ship built by Western Pipe & Steel for the U.S. Shipping Board in World War I. The vessel was the third ship to be built by WPS, and was delivered on February 1st 1919, too late to see service in the war. This is one of the early WPS ships which was powered by the unreliable General Electric steam turbine, which eventually caused her to be scrapped in 1929. The picture is a little fuzzy, so by way of explanation, the whitish rectangular shape which rises high from the deck somewhat forward of the funnel is actually the ship's bridge, which was separate from the rest of the superstructure on these ships.
