This world-traveller was born in Werkhoven. He was part of the Dutch and Dutch East India Company embassy to "Pekin" in 1795; which meant that he was amongst last Europeans to be officially received in the Chinese Imperial Court until after the Opium Wars of the 19th Century. His account of that diplomatic mission was widely distributed in his lifetime.
