The van Bram's account of the Titsingh mission was initially written in French and published in Philadelphia. This is an image of the title page from the second printing in 1798. An abridged, English-language version of the book was published in London soon after.

This world-traveller was born in Werkhoven. He was part of the Dutch and Dutch East India Company embassy to "Pekin" in 1795; which meant that he was amongst last Europeans to be officially received in the Chinese Imperial Court until after the Opium Wars of the 19th Century. His account of that diplomatic mission was widely distributed in his lifetime.
