The Welsh Open is a professional snooker tournament. It is one of a number of ranking tournaments. It had replaced the Welsh Professional Championship, which started in 1980 and only had Welsh players involved.
The tournament became a ranking tournament in 1992 and brought in overseas players and it was known as the Regal Welsh Open until 2003. It was played at the Newport Centre as it was with the successor above before moving to the Cardiff International Arena in 1999. It was moved back to Newport in 2005.
The tournament currently takes place in late February and early March. Prize money for 2006 totalled £225,000 ($435,532) with the winner receiving £35,000 ($67,758).
