Wellsville, New York

Wellsville, New York is a village and a town in Allegany County, New York, USA.

Wellsville was named after Garner Wells a prominent business man who did not attend the Town meeting to name the Town due to being very ill. Some of the other men on the board, Silas Hills and his brother Samuel Hills asked that the Town be named Wellsville after Wells. Silas Hills was the owner of the first store in Wellsville. Hills built the first bridge in Wellsville which was located over the Genesee River near the Wellsville High School on West State Street. Hills and Wells bought and sold land to and from each other. Both were well respected in the Community. Gardner Wells is buried in Friendship,NY while Silas Hills is buried in Wellsvlle, NY.
