Wells-On-Sea railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wells-On-Sea was a railway station on the Wells & Fakenham Railway, later part of the Great Eastern Railway. It opened on 1 December 1857, and served the town of Wells-next-the-Sea. It closed on 5 October 1964. The station building is currently (2007) a second-hand bookshop and pottery, with the site of the platforms now an industrial estate know as Great Eastern Way.
Originally known as simply "Wells", the station was renamed "Wells-On-Sea" on 1 July 1923, before being finally renamed "Wells-Next-The-Sea" on 1 January 1957.
Since 1982, there has been a second station at Wells - the terminus of the narrow gauge Wells and Walsingham Light Railway. This station is sited to the south of where the original line formerly crossed the main coast road on the level.
