Welcome the Night is The Ataris' fifth studio album and long delayed follow-up to the previous release So Long, Astoria. It was originally scheduled to be released in 2005 but the release date had been pushed back to 2007 due to the inner dissipation of the band's now former label Columbia records. In late 2006 the band were finally granted release from their contract allowing them to start their own label isola recordings, partnering with Sanctuary Records group, home to such artists as Morrissey, Tegan and Sara and Iron Maiden.
On December 19, 2006 the single/EP "Not Capable of Love" was released on iTunes to mixed reviews. It had the single "Not Capable of Love" as the first track and the B-side "Welcome the Night" as the second.
The album was released on February 20, 2007 on isola recordings / Sanctuary Records. The video for "Not Capable of Love" was released in February 2007. Early pressings of the CD purchased at Best Buy contained a bonus disc with "The First Elegy" as track one and "Sonnet for the Early Departed" as track two. Also, early pressings of the CD purchased at Target contain the bonus track "The Ghost of Last December". The special edition of this album, sold in Canada and Europe by HMV, contains "Welcome the Night" and "The Ghost of Last December" as bonus tracks.*
The album debuted at number 85 on the Billboard 200, selling about 10,000 copies in its first week on the chart.[1]
