[edit] Welcome!

Hi, Welland R, welcome to WikiProject LGBT Studies!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles of interest to the LGBT community. Some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve LGBT-related articles, so if someone asks for help with an article, please try your hardest to help them if you are able.
  • Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, peer review and a project-wide article collaboration, all of which you are welcome to take part in. We also have a unique program to improve our lower quality articles, Jumpaclass, so please consider signing up there.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign LGBT topics.
  • If you're planning to stay, have a square in our quilt! You can put anything you want in it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome!

Wow, I was checking out that course At Yale just yesterday. It looks fantastic. Hey, would you mind sticking up our poster around the place? http://wplgbt.tripod.com/Wikipedianeedsyou.doc (you have to directly cut and paste the url, or it won't let you download it). Also, do you know of any LGBT history textbooks? I'm drawing a blank through Google. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 08:42, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for your welcome! I have just downloaded the poster and will happily place it around campus. As far as a book to use as a textbook, I would suggest, for its encompassing nature, Queer Cultures, edited by Deborah Carlin and Jennifer DiGrazia (Prentice Hall, 2003). Or else, A Desired Past: A Short History of Same-Sex Love in America, by Leila J. Rupp (U of Chicago, 2002); Making Gay History: The Half Century Fight for Lesbian and Gay Equal Rights, by Eric Marcus (Harper, 2002). These could certainly serve as core texts for a LGBTQ course. Welland R 12:38, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Excellent, I shall try to track copies of those down! I'm interested in creating a Wikibook on LGBT history, but wanted a little precedent to work from. :) Most textbooks on Wikibooks, regrettably, are nowhere near the standard I would want to pitch to an educator. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 17:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Ooh, if you put up the poster anywhere, can you take a medium range photo of it on a noticeboard (so you can see it's on a noticeboard, but also make out the "Wikipedia needs you" words)? It would make a great publicity photo for some stuff I'm planning. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 23:30, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Douglas

Hello Welland R, Thanks for changing the text in the Alfred Douglas page. I hesitate to do so myself because I'm not a native English speaker. Obviously your idea of the inhabitants of Poet Land is a vast multitude of minor poets with a few major ones sticking out, whereas I think there's a mass of poets, a few major ones and a few minor poets like the one who was a fag of Byron, dined with him and 'inherited some of his master's poetical talent'. 'Minor poet' in the case of Douglas by the way was a correction a half year ago of 'obscure poet'. Soczyczi 11:10, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Day books

A while ago you contributed a reference about Walt Whitman's relationships with street boys, from his day books. Can you steer me to a good source for these day books? On line? Has anyone analyzed them from a queer perspective, not to say a pederastic one? Regards, Haiduc 02:47, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Most of the relevant portions of Whitman's daybooks have been extracted in Charley Shively (ed.), Calamus Lovers: Walt Whitman's Working-Class Camerados (San Francisco: Gay Sunshine Press, 1987); Charley Shively (ed.) Drum Beats: Walt Whitman's Civil War Boy Lovers (San Francisco: Gay Sunshine Press, 1989). For more scholarly purposes, you would want to quote from the authoritative edition: Walt Whitman, Daybooks and Notebooks, ed. by William White (New York: New York University Press, 1978). Welland R 11:51, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Non-political

Thank you for your attention to keeping politics out of gender discussions. I would be interested in your opinion on the goings-on at Category:Pederasty. Haiduc 11:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, Mr. Masterful Editor, I will certainly do as you request, but probably in a few months (end of term and too many essays to compose :-(

[edit] LGBT literature taskforce?

Hi, I was wondering if you'd like to set up an LGBT Literature taskforce as part of the Wikiproject. I think that should include critical theory as well - queer theory.Zigzig20s 00:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I would love to ... but, it is too close to the end of the university term. In the summer, I am all yours :-) Welland R 06:05, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
Cool. I, too, can't really work on it too much for a month or so because of exams (though I did read Valmouth and created the page some hours ago), so that's fine. Have you ever read anything by Ronald Firbank? I found it difficult to read, I had to look up words on every other page - well at least I added lots of quotes on Wiktionary! Anyway, please keep me posted when you have more time...Zigzig20s 03:42, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Hello there, are u still interested? Now it's the holiday I suppose you might have more free time to get to it. I've been working on lgbt-themed novels and it would be great if there was a batch of other people working towards that aim too. As it is, we need at least three people to start a taskforce, so ur more than welcome to join it!Zigzig20s 09:02, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Dear Zigzig, thank you for the invitation ... but, for the next portion of the year, I will have to decline. I'm on a "parents supported" holiday ("for two" :-) ! Which means we are jaunting about in various venues of the world (which translates into "LIBRARIES") and sipping cocktails (NO PUN INTENDED! TRULY!). So I'm afraid my appearances on Wikipedia will be spurious at best, and often from the infamous "internet cafe." But, I will pop in occasionally with a bit of info. Pleasant summer to you! [edit] Silentlambs

Hi Welland. Thanks for the clarification sentence on the Antipedophile activism article [1]. I think this organization is significant enough to warrant its own article. Its described in several published books and involves thousands of individual cases. What are your thoughts? Realbie 03:10, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

If you think it warrents a small article of its own, make it :-) Personally, I know nothing about the group, save for the slight addition I made. Perhaps you could contact Silentlambs and ask them what resources/newspaper articles/etc. have commented on their work. These could then be included in the article. All the best, Welland R 10:35, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] XavierVE

I have reported this user to the administrators board, for the inappropriate edit they made about you here. Wikipedia should not be tolerating this. Fighting for Justice 04:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I hope the above comment was in no way a reference to *me*. The only alteration I have made recently to the "Anti-Pedophile Activism" article was the insertion of the date and page number of the following: Rolling Stone, Issue 1032 (July, 9 2007), pgs. 64-71.[2] The obnoxious, un-encyclopedic entry was made by someone going by the username of Tyciol. [3] I would have removed this user's comments myself had another user, Homologeo, not called for a citation to be added. [4] So, let it be said again, "I certainly hope the comments above, about reporting a user, are not directed at me :-) You will find that *all* of my edits to this article have been *very* encyclopedic, an attempt to bastion it with actual sources, something that it certainly needed. Sincerely, Welland R 09:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
It is a user named Xavier that I was referring to. I reported him, because he accused you of being a pedophile in his edit summary. Fighting for Justice 09:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
It might have looked that way, but I am assuming that dear Xavier was actually commenting on Tyciol, the one who actually added the material he was angered by. Either that, or he is subtracting about fifteen years from the age of my girlfriend, who would probably love that suggestion! (She is always expecting Clinque to supply that "fountain of youth"!) Welland R 09:53, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
You were completely correct in that Homologeo's 'cite sources' request was completely deserved. I think I'll talk it over with him on his userpage, or on the talk-page of the article in question, about how to best reintroduce this edit. It would be nice to properly finesse it as to be properly sourced and agreed upon before reintroducing it anyway. I'm not about to reintroduce it just because Xavier removed it with a rude comment unnecessarily since it was already properly tagged at the time. Welland, would you like to help in coordinating this critique with Homeologo so I can find out what specifically needs addressing? Tyciol 16:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
The comment, as you already know, was about Tyciol who was the one that added the content in question. I would think that any long-time Wikipedia user would know how to check an edit history to see who added the content in question. Welland R is obviously not a pedophile and even more obviously not the person who added the paragraph I removed. XavierVE 15:15, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Absolutely. Why Fighting for Justice, an experienced wikipedian, should claim that you were involved in this edit is frankly bizarre, SqueakBox 16:38, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
It does seem pretty strange. The best explanation (since I wouldn't want to accuse FfJ of being purposefully misleading) is that he misread the name. Welland R did make edits directly before mine, and also was the last to edit before Xavier made his comment. Often reverts happen directly after edits, so if you hadn't actually gone back in the history (which you would need to do to identify it was my addition, and not Welland's, that was removed) it would be natural to assume that the edit directly preceding Xavier's reversion was the one he was reverting. Since it takes time to verify such things, he may have had it in his head that it was Welland's when he went to notify whoever was being name-called about reporting X for it. Anyway, I'm sure he knows now, I wouldn't think badly of him for it. I know now too anyway so leaving me a message wouldn't be needed. It makes me wonder, was this the issue that got Xavier banned or was it something else? I'm looking at surrounding data but it's difficult to reach any sort of conclusion about it. Tyciol 16:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Ah, all is cleared up. All I saw was Xavier accusing you of being a pedophile which seemed rather... incredible, to say the least. Lol. Hope you're well. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 16:56, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
The edit Xavier made there was in reference to me and the edit I made, not to WellandR, please look closer next time you make accusations. A comment like this belongs on my talkpage, not WellandR's. Of course, the accusation is still very much unwarranted and worthy of reporting, since it is somewhat libellous and the only ones who apparently 'know' (ala, they don't) this are Xavier's organization Perverted-Justice and their extensions. [edit] Pro-pedophile activism

Hey, just droppping you a note that I volunteered to mediate this case. It looks like everyone's willing to work out a solution, and I look forward to working with you. I've noticed the case has been open for a bit, so I just wanted to ask you to weigh in when necessary. Thanks. justice 21:48, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Formal Mediation for the Pro-pedophile Activism Article

As you may already know, the informal attempt at mediation for the pro-pedophile article was not successful. A request has been placed for formal mediation, which is now in the process of getting started. Seeing as you have been previously actively involved in editing this article, and were one of the parties listed as participating in the informal mediation process, you may be interested in participating in formal mediation. I have already inquired if it would be acceptable for editors not currently listed on the Mediation Page to be involved. ~ Homologeo 19:58, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

I've been told that anyone who's been actively involved in editing the article is welcome to join the formal mediation process. The only condition is that all the participating parties have to agree with who joins in. ~ Homologeo 20:48, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you are free to join. Please sign your name as to whether you agree or disagree in the section provided. Cheers, Daniel 06:18, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
As I said in regard to the "informal mediation": I will assist in whatever ways I can. I'm on-board, if that is desired and considered proper. Sincerely, Welland R 08:15, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, Welland, forgot you again :(. At least you're in now, that's what counts. Martijn Hoekstra 11:56, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Current Issues

I am contacting all those involved in the mediation @ Pro-pedophile activism who seem to have missed one or both of these issues. Hopefully, with more editors voicing their opinions, we can approach consensus on these taxing questions.

Thanks for the information, but I am *extremely bored* with the debate over the "Pro-Pedophile Activism" article--which I only got involved with in the first place because I had already made significant additions to the "Anti-Pedophile Activism" article--and I have no desire or interest to edit anything else in a similar vein. (My interests are historical and cultural, not contemporary, so those articles are just not of any interest to me.) Good luck in your edits and dispute-resolutions, Mr./Ms. Anonymous ... [edit] Irritability

Hi, Welland. I noticed your comment on the PPA page, and I can sympathise with your frustration. When frustration gets high, I always try to don't care so much, which, I admit, can be hard. However, when you do get frustrated, realise that telling that you are annoyed will not likely speed up the process. For me, I know I'm doing all I can to further mediation. That's all I can do. All you can do is the same. And when the steam builds up, it might be time for having a nice cup of tea and a sit down Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 19:32, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Dear Martijn, My comments were not really directed to you or another from mediation that is also working to further things. It was directed at one particular individual whom I was going out of my way not to address specifically. For months he has refused to act constructively, but why should he ... since his delays result in the indefinite retention of his own unencyclopedic materials. In essence, I feel as if the whole mediation process, which was, in many ways, prompted by him, was merely a diversion, a false pretence. If I hadn't gone down the road of this mediation to the point I have, I would have washed my hands of this protracted insanity long ago. Enjoy your cup of tea. Welland R (talk) 11:08, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop

[edit] Pro-pedophile activism

Hi, could you pop over to the MedCom wiki and take a look at a way to move forward? I've copied over the introduction and would like everyone be bold an make changes to it, hopefully we should be able to thrash out a consensus. Take a look at this. Ryan Postlethwaite 20:05, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] FYI

I noticed your participation in discussions about this user, or similar articles to those which he was seemingly banned for editing.

See at the bottom of the talkpage:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:TlatoSMD Karla Lindstrom 10:34, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

In all honesty, I have no idea what this could possibly relate to. I cannot recall having even come across the username "TlatoSMD" before now, and have no particular interest in reading her/his userpage or participating in any consideration of her/his presence on Wikipedia. Although I have not found myself free of the occasional squabble with other users, I really attempt to focus entirely on the edits themselves, and to avoid a consideration of the "hurt self-hoods" of other editors, especially when those don't involve me personally. (I often feel that if editors spent more time editing and less time concerned about their "status" or "persona" on Wikipedia that the place would prove more congenial ... I also make it a habit not to open Wikipedia for periods of a week or so, which removes that sense of "I'm overly involved" and "This is my own sandbox," a practice I would recommend to many of those who take Wikipedia far too seriously. For god's sake, it is an encyclopedia, not life!) So, thanks for thinking I might prove helpful in some way ... but I simply, to be blunt, don't and won't care about this issue (whatever it is). Cheers, Welland R (talk) 11:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

As part of the pro-pedophile activism mediation, I've created a mentorship page with appointed mentors for editors to report problems to.
