[edit] Elitism scandal
One of Wee's daughters, Wee Shu Min, found herself at the centre of an Internet scandal in October 2006 for posting on her blog what is viewed by some Singaporeans to be elitist[1], naive and insensitive statements against heartlanders.[2] Dismissing the views of Derek Wee who voiced concerns on job security and age discrimination on his blog, she shot back with a take-no-prisoners diatribe[1][3], that Derek was a "stupid crackpot", "the sadder class", overreliant on the government, and that Singaporean society was "far too survival of the fittest" and for Derek to "get out of my elite uncaring face".[4] Following intense criticism by netizens on her post as highly insensitive at a time when, coincidentally, a high-profile suicide of an impoverished heartlander at Chinese Garden MRT Station was being heavily publicised[5][6] and her name topping Technorati's search terms for a week, she has since appeared to have apologised[7] on another blog and shut down her own.[2]
