We Don't Need to Whisper is the debut album by Angels & Airwaves. It was released on May 20, 2006 in Australia, on May 22 in the UK, and on May 23 in North America.

The album drew mixed reactions from critics, with a Metacritic average of 53.[1]

We Don't Need to Whisper' was certified Gold in Canada (50,000 copies) in 3 days. It was certified Silver in the UK (60,000 copies) and sold over 127,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. A large number of fans pre-ordered the album, which may explain the high debut sales.

As of March 18, 2007, the album has sold over 600,000 copies in the US alone. As of July 2007, it has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide.[2]

Reviews for the album have been mixed, but it nonetheless has been nominated and won more awards alone than any other of DeLonge's previous projects. The album is considered a concept album due to that fact that all the songs are part of the same story, revolving around the idea of finding love in the middle of a war zone. The next album, I-Empire, is said to be the continuation of this idea.

[edit] Making of the album

The roots of the album can be traced back to Blink-182 writing sessions that began on tour in 2004, in preparation for a new Blink-182 album. When Tom DeLonge departed Blink-182 in February 2005, he used some of these demos as foundations for Angels & Airwaves songs.

For the rest of 2005, Tom and his new bandmates wrote and recorded all of the songs on this album at his home studio.

[edit] Leak

The full album leaked on P2P networks on April 10, 2006. It is said Delonge leaked the album himself so that people would be able to sing along at their pre-release shows.

The commercially released version of the album has several differences from the leaked version of the album, which hit the Internet more than a month before its official release date. Notable changes include an extra guitar part after the first chorus of "Valkyrie Missile," a different mix for "It Hurts," and an added final note at the end of "Start the Machine." Also, the intro in the track "The Adventure" had split in between two songs. The original beginning of the song "The Adventure" was split into two, the first part being put at the end of the previous track, "Do It For Me Now".
