WDCT (AM)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WDCT is a U.S. radio station broadcasting from Fairfax, Virginia, in the mediumwave AM band on the frequency of 1310 kHz. It serves the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area with Korean language programming.

The station began broadcasting in 1955 as WFCR (Fairfax Circle/County Radio), owned by the Olsen/Kellar Broadcasting Company. At first the signal was 500 watts power with the authority to broadcast sunrise-to-sunset. In 1962, OK was granted permission to increase their power to 5 kW daytime and 500 watts night. That year, the station's call sign changed to WEEL, for a contest called "Wheel-O." During the 1960s and 1970s, the station had an adult contemporary format, which was characterized as "almost Top 40." WEEL was always compared with Top 40 stations WEAM on 1390 kHz and WPGC on 1580 kHz.

The station was then sold to the family of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who then sold the station to a nonprofit organization, which changed the callsign to WDCT and began Christian programming.
