The station went on the air as WZJQ on 1991-06-14. On 1994-04-20, the station changed it's call sign to WWSS. On 1994-11-28, the station changed to WWBZ and aired a syndicated beach music format as "The Breeze" while part of an LMA with WHBZ. On 2004-12-07, the change to the current letters was made. WAZS-FM aired urban contemporary and later rhythmic CHR before the switch to the current format.[2]
