Wayside Chapel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wayside Chapel was established in Kings Cross in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1964. It has ministered to the lonely, homeless, abused and dispossessed. In the late 1990's it established an illegal "Tolerance Room" (where drug addicts were able to inject in a supervised environment) as an act of civil disobedience. This eventually led to the creation of the legal medically supervised injecting centre in Kings Cross.
Ted Noffs and the Uniting Church in Australia were important instigators for the Chapel. The current general manager is Graham Long.
It has pioneered far-reaching and innovative developments in social welfare:
- crisis centres
- drug rehabilitation centers
- drug referral centers
- Shepherd of the Streets
- Life Education Centres
- Hands-On Health services.
