Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 13,259. Its county seat is Greenville[1]. The county was organized in 1818 and named for Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne, who served in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 774 square miles (2,005 km²), of which, 761 square miles (1,971 km²) of it is land and 13 square miles (34 km²) of it (1.69%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 13,259 people, 5,551 households, and 3,841 families residing in the county. The population density was 17 people per square mile (7/km²). There were 7,496 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.68% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 32.9% were of American, 15.0% German, 11.9% English and 11.7% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 5,551 households out of which 27.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% were married couples living together, 9.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% were non-families. 27.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $24,007, and the median income for a family was $28,846. Males had a median income of $26,241 versus $17,232 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,434. About 17.90% of families and 21.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.70% of those under age 18 and 15.60% of those age 65 or over.

Out of a 3,610-person workforce in Wayne County, 3,200 are employed. The unemployment rate is 11.4 percent with 410 out of work. The average hourly wage for the county is $8.02 per hour in the manufacturing sector, and $7.46 in non-manufacturing.
