From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wayne Brittain is a former coach of the Australian Football League.

Wayne coached the Carlton Football Club from 2001 until 2002. He was sacked at the end of the 2002 season after the club finished last for the first time in its history.

He served as assistant coach at Carlton under David Parkin and was credited with much of the clubs sucess in the 2000 home and away season.

His first year as senior coach was lackluster, with the club turning in match winning performances against Premieres Essendon twice that year; struggling for consistency the club finished sixth overall and played two games in the finals series. The following year the club fininshed last for the first time in its history, winning only three games.

Brittain inhereited a very old playing list that was plagued with injuries to key players in 2002 such as Anthony Koutafidies, Brett Ratten and Andrew McKay. The club had also failed to fill the hole left in the back line left by the retirement of Stephen Silvagni the year before.

After being dimissed from Carlton in favour of Denis Pagan at the end of 2002, Brittain went on to be an assistant coach at Richmond under Danny Frawley.

He is one of the few people to coach an AFL side that never played in the AFL others being Neil Craig, Mark Riley .
