[edit] History
WAVF signed on March 11th, 1985 with sound effects of ocean waves over a period of a week. When the stunt was over, the station debuted with an Album Rock format under the "96 Wave" handle. By 1993, WAVF adjusted its format toward alternative rock, but kept the 96 Wave name.
On August 31, 2007 at 5pm, 96 Wave became known as 96.1 The Wave, after stunting for over 20 minutes playing the "Charles in Charge" theme song. The first song played on the new 96.1FM was Take This Job and Shove It by Johnny Paycheck.
The final song played on WAVF as My Wave by Soundgarden.
[edit] Return
The Wave's Alternative format returned, in a slightly different form, on September 12th, 2007. The station will stream an Alternative music format online, like the one previously heard on 96.1FM at 96wave.com.
