[edit] Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Fangz 15:15, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] "At the Hip"

Please don't recreate this article—the television show doesn't actually exist (nothing about it on IMDb), and nothing has been found to even verify that it is or was in production. Even more importantly, the article was previously deleted by community consensus (see Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/At The Hip). If you have corroborating sources, please list the article for undeletion consideration at Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion. Postdlf 23:39, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, my mistake...I thought you were the original poster, not merely a subsequent editor. Postdlf 23:45, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stub sorting

Hi WAvegetarian. Welcome to Wikipedia!

Glad to see that you've taken to the (usually) thankless but utterly necessary task of stub sorting and tagging. I'd encourage you to check out Wikipedia:Template messages/Stubs to see a complete list of the stub templates sanctioned by the stub sorting Wikiproject. For example, a lot of different sports have specific stub templates for player biographies.

One more thought—I would strongly urge you to leave at least a little edit summary, even when you're just stub sorting. (The edit summary, "Stub sorting" would, in fact, be just perfect.) Otherwise, other editors following Recent Changes can't tell what you've done without manually inspecting your edit. It's also a very good idea to leave some sort of edit summary when tagging an article for (speedy) deletion, on the off chance that someone actually has watchlisted it and is interested in its welfare and improvement.

I don't mean to pick on you; you're doing a fine job. Keep up the good work!

Cheers, TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 00:56, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] VfD nominations

Annoyingly, nominating an article for deletion is actually a three step process. Please follow the steps at Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion#How_to_list_pages_for_deletion. Also, make sure to use the vfd2 and vfd3 tags listed there to enter your reason for deletion and place the page on the deletion log. That's how other people will be able to see the nomination even if they don't happen to go to the page. I've gone back through your edit history to format the entries you've already tagged and added them to the log for July 8. Thanks for helping to keep the place clean.

[edit] Hardy Boys - Clues Brothers

If you would check my Hardy Boys page's Paperback section, you would find extensive info on the Clues Brothers, contrary to what you stated on my user page. --FWDixon 18:32, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Clues Brothers

YOU WROTE: "Please add a link to that section then, not your main page which displays a direct link to your sales page and no info.WAvegetarian 18:37, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)"

Who are you to dictate how links should be made? --FWDixon 18:41, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hardy Boys

YOU WROTE "Look, I don't want to get into a flame war with you. I am an editor of the encyclopedia. This is an encyclopedia; its purpose is to dispense information. If I looked up Clues Brothers on Wikipedia and then followed your link to your main page, I would have no idea where to find info on Clues Brothers. If external liks don't link directly to information regarding the topic of the article they are inappropriate. If they link to the creator's homepage, they are self promotion. If they link to the creator's business page, they are advertising. I can get an admin to tell you if you would prefer.WAvegetarian 18:47, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC) "

I don't want to flame war either but you are just nit-picking. It's very easy to negotiate my Hardy Boys site. BTW: It's NOT my home page (which would be www.bobfinnan.com) nor is it an advertising page (which would be (http://hardyboys.bobfinnan.com/amazon.htm). I spent several hours updating the Hardy Boys entries and I DO NOT appreciate that you are going around removing valid links to my site. Please cease and desist. Thank you. --FWDixon 18:55, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] SO go get an admin

YOU WROTE: "If you do not cease and desist, I will get an admin. You must not add generic main page links to specific articles. If you do not change all of your generic links to more specific ones, as per my edit to the Clues Brothers, I will get an admin. This is self promotion. I don't play games.WAvegetarian 19:07, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)"

Cease and desist what? You act like I can change things immediately. I spent several hours putting up all those articles. Why don't you help me change the links that bother you so much, as I started to do before your insulting email? Don't threaten me, it accomplishes nothing. If you don't cease harrassing me, I'LL get an admin. I don't play games either. Now lighten up. I'm new here and I'm doing the best I can.

[edit] Double-lined mackerel

The article title is perfectly fine; all that needed to be done is a complete rewrite, with meaningful stuff. Thanks. -Hmib 07:45, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've rewritten the article as a stub; please take a look. Also, I'm claiming this as "my" page. :D -Hmib 07:52, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Diving cleanup

You added the cleanup tag to Diving, but didn't explain what needed to be done. Please add a note to the Talk:Diving page listing what you think needs getting done - that will help people(like me) to do it. You can also make use of the Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce. [edit] GHS

Collin Sutton, GHS c/o '07. In-text citations are often helpful, I agree. Maybe we should try to place the citations (templated or not) with the section the source is used in whenever possible? When a citation link is broken, though, such as the one under history, they're no good at all. Something else to consider: it would seem that the general style on Wikipedia is to provide a link the the Wiki page for a certain thing if it exists, rather than to simply provide a link to an external web page (as I've done with the Mountaineers reference).--Insaneinside 19:57, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

I'm happy to help however you like. If there's a bit of ancient Garfield history or a bio, you're more than welcome to run it by me for details. It sounds like you've got a good project going. [edit] Word Freak

Thanks for getting in touch with me. Regarding the Word Freak entry, I think if you just remove the quote from the LA Times, and also the reference to "Farsis' wit" (just "Farsis' humorous approaches" would be better), the NPOV requirements would be satisfied. You added the extremely generic US-stub to this article. In the future, please consider using a more specific and helpful stub such as NorthCarolina-geo-stub. You can find all of them at Wikipedia:Stub_categories. Doing a quick spell check on stubs doesn't hurt either. --WAvegetarian 23:06, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

RE: Speedy Deletion

I apologize for utilizing the speedy deletion template. However, as a non-admin contributing wikipedian, I found that that particular page met criteria for speedy deletion, like a hand in a glove. How do you suppose I should tag such pages for speedy deletion, in the future, for example, without creating unnecessary work for admins? --Master Jay 01:09, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hoax: Gunnamatta Bay

Well I must say that Gunnamatta Bay was indeed created by an anonymous IP (210.50.73.10) who did not fill in an edit summary clearly stating where it was etc., as I was viewing New-pages and the content that you can only see of the article is the edit summary, henceforth, I viewed it as suspicious. -- Kilo-Lima 17:39, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Navy Baseball Issues

Thank you very much for your quick response. I had recently been directed to your site by some satisfied Naval Officer peers and Wikipedia users stating that it might be another great way to let military people know about our program.

As you might imagine with service members all over the world, they will tend to use a variety of search engines to locate our program once they hear about it, or just surf in one day.

Please advise the next steps to make this happen. I currently own and operate both domains: www.usmilitaryallstars.us and www.usnavybaseball.com

I am listed everywhere as the General manager since 1990 on various articles and on our sites. If you require further proof, please advise what will be acceptable.

Thanks Again,

You recently deleted this page under CSD A3. It had been originally tagged as G1, then corrected to A1. I don't understand how content which mirrors the article title qualifies as vandalism. Could you please explain your rationale? --WAvegetarian 13:52, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

A3 is "Any article whose contents consist only of an external link, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, or rephrasing of the title." You're thinking G3. —Cryptic (talk) 18:22, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

I'm going back to the University of Hawaii's Asian Language department in about a month and a half. If I'm not in Pittsburgh I guess I'll look for it. They don't let you xerox, take pictures, or any of that though (the papers are too old, apparently). It was just an interesting article and a Chinese Prof. told me about it, and the closest phonetic equivalent I could think of was "Sachie". No one there believes it could have flown. The article I wrote was out of memory, and the design I saw looked harmless and didn't seem pilotable. There are hundreds of volumes to look through, if you'll take my word on it, it's there somewhere. The veracity is still questionable, but the record is there.

[edit] Fixing monobook.js for afd helper

Hi. You tried to install the afd helper, but it seems you copied the script at a time when some things had accidentally been capitalised, breaking the script. Please replace AFD_helper with afd_helper in your monobook.js. Thanks and enjoy! jnothman talk 22:25, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

The reason none of your scripts were loading was due to a problem in your copying of the Google Link script. Because of the way the script was displayed when you copied it, some important ''s in the script were removed because they were treated by MediaWiki as wiki markup. This meant that they disappeared and you copied broken code into your monobook.js. Go copy the current version which I've fixed to display correctly. Then afd helper should work. But using your monobook.js, I couldn't work out why the other scripts were still not loading. (I could ask my browser to load them independently, but they weren't automatically loading when the page started. Try using another method of loading them when the page does; I could help you with this if you need to.) Enjoy! jnothman talk 23:02, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Licensing

Hi WAvegetarian! You dropped me this message about my Image:Reichskanzlei-Fuehrerbunker.jpg : You have tagged this image with a cc-sa 2.5 license. This license grants the right "to make commercial use of the work." You have also written a declaration that the work may not be commercially used. This stipulation is in direct contradiction to the license. Please see Wikipedia:Copyrights for more information about proper licensing. If this is not addressed soon I will list the image for deletion.

I have fixed this issue, but I wanted to ask you about licensing. I wanted to release the image free for any use except commercial (and I thought the license I used was the correct one). Due to your message I read more about licensing and found on the bottom of this page (Wikipedia:Copyright_FAQ#Non-commercial_licenses): As with non-commercial and educational licenses, these may not be used on Wikipedia, although works licensed as such may be used under the guise of fair use.

Can I in this way specify my image as "fair use" , not commercial? It is not super-important to me, but if you have knowledge about this kind of licensing, I would very much appreciate a message on my talk page.

[edit] Scrabble

Hello,

In the Scrabble article I can't find any reference to TWL or TWL98, though these are dictionaries referred to in the external links. I know them from scrabble sites like the ISC or BingoBinge. I understand that dictionary matters (SOWPODS, TWL, ENABLE) are somewhat confusing and even 'painful'. Some explanation would be helpful, especially for someone - like me - whose mother tongue isn't English. Maybe a new TWL article could do the job. There is a SOWPODS stub too!

Thank you.

[edit] Re: Julius Caesar

No, actually the only reason I reverted was because you deleted half of the page with your revert [1]. Since I assumed it was accidental (or an old browser issue), I didn't contact you, and instead reverted to the version you wanted to revert. Don't worry about that. [edit] hey

Hey Connor, you seem like an amazingly awesome kid...scrabble, ultimate, wikipedia.... I assume you know Dan Lesser and Ben Mew via Oberlin disc; they went to my high school and I have had many lovely encounters with both over the years. And scrabble, too; rock on. Not enough people appreciate scrabble as they should. Anyway, props for being you :) GlamdringCookies 23:54, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Wow, that's really coincidental...Ben was in chorus with me and we were co-captains of an intramural ultimate team a couple years ago...out of curiosity, do you know of any scrabble clubs based in the Amherst, MA area or the New London, CT area? I'd love to get involved with the club scrabble scene, but am woefully ignorant on such matters. And sorry if your talk page is the wrong place for such comments; if I knew how the whole emaily thing works, I would use that. GlamdringCookies 00:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Page moves

I know, and I have no idea who did it or where. The "what links here" should tell, but I'm not sure how to do it and it will ultimately have to be done by an admin. The link, when I clicked it on the main page, led to a double redirect to a red link. I finally found the article and managed to move it to one location and unify the redirects (I think) but again I'm unsure where the page history went - I just wanted to make sure the links pointed to the same place for now given that it's on the main page. [edit] Userbox Jain

First of all, I didn't create it. DotShell simply asked me to add it. Second, while I believe that the boxes should be deleted, I am ok with it here until it is vote off. However, I guess to remove any arguments, I'll probably remove it. I guess the fact that you chose to be so uncivil (what else would an immediate accusation of sheer hypocrisy?) in your first conversation with me makes me wonder if people are right to worry about civility here as well. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 05:51, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userboxes

Thank you for your message on my talk page. I think, if you look at my contribs, you'll soon find the reason for my general objection to userboxes is that they facilitate the gathering together of associations of Wikipedians by POV. In fact, long before the userbox issue began to be controversial, I was arguing strongly against any way in which Wikipedians gathered by POV. I am not against Wikipedians declaring their affiliations and their biases (which, it should be said, we all have) on their user page: on the contrary, it's a thing to be encouraged because it helps when there is an editing dispute. However, this should never go to advocacy. Associations of Wikipedians by POV leads to attempts at vote stacking on AfD, which we have already seen.

What this amounts to in relation to userboxes is this, which is the policy I would support: there should be no userboxes advocating opinions; userboxes which report affiliations are allowed, but they should never link to categories, and they must be substed and not transcluded; userboxes showing background information are acceptable. I do not accept your accusation of hypocrisy, as I am not a member of any association of Wikipedians by POV (I removed myself from Category:Atheist Wikipedians). Nor do I accept that it discriminates against new users, because it's a simple matter for the Userbox wikiproject to teach new users how to code.

Can I suggest that there are three planks on which we can agree:

  1. The userboxes on my user page are not against any current policy. The issue of what should be the policy, if any, has not yet been decided.
  2. The great userbox debate has seen too many contributions which have commented on personalities rather than issues.
  3. The time you spent leaving a message on my talk page and the time I spent replying would have been better spent writing articles.

Is this agreed? David | Talk 13:47, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Red Dwarf

I've unfortunately only had the opportunity to watch one or two epidsodes, but I do enjoy it muchly. I should get on that sometime. And yeah, I got 3 sudoku-related gifts for christmas (2 books and a calendar). I frequently do them online as well, usually at [2]. -GlamdringCookies 13:48, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

hi WAV -- thanks for keeping on top of this one. It's ridiculously late, and I'm going to bed; if he reverts again, would you add him on Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism? And nice to see other veggies around here! bikeable (talk) 08:49, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Remagine vandalism, et cetera

  1. Thanks for dropping a line. I'm glad to hear he's working it out with you. I suspected more of a problem understanding how the Wikipedia works more than straight-out maliciousness. And hi from the dark side of the 49th.
  2. My big fear with Tiger is whether my system can handle it (iMac G4 1.25ghz, 1gb RAM). I'm already dealing with a huge performance hit in iTunes since v.5 (my music library is a huge passion of mine, nearly 10,000 tracks and daily tweaking and editing). I'm worried the new features in Tiger (as drool-worthy as they are) will tax my system even more. - Dharmabum420 10:19, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Classic isn't a problem for me, since I only migrated to the OS X platform in 2003, after many years of trying to find OS happiness through OS/2 and Linux on the Intel platform. What I really need to do is test Tiger on my system, I just don't have any way to do so, as I live in a world of Microsoft users who don't understand my hatred of the MS world (except my brother-in-law, but he's stuck on a G3 and isn't considering Tiger at all). Hopefully, I'll be able to upgrade my system in the next few months and make the whole debate irrelevant. Thanks for the input, though, and for the record, my will to resist paying the cash to try out Tiger is eroding every day. :) - Dharmabum420 10:54, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suffrage

While I would agree that you are most likely correct in your interpretation of the wordage on what you must have to vote....I am going to disagree obviously because I -do- want to vote, and being disregarded for a lack of 12 edits just makes my head hurt. So, I am going to claim ambiguity in the wordage used which is In order to vote, you must have an account registered on or before 30 September 2005 and 150 edits by the start of the election (January 9). There is no time stated, just a date. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Arkon 22:59, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism? 2

Vandalism? What vandalism? I was talking with an adnministrator about an image I had used for one of my userboxes. He said it did not belong on Wikipedia in an article. A picture used in an article would be more appropriate. I had a pic of George W. Bush, which suited what I needed. The pic was perfect for the article on George W. Bush, as it was lacking in objectivity and seem to whitewash the subject a bit. If there is any offense to George W. Bush giving the finger to the American people, take it up with him. But, I make no apologies for contributing to the historical record.-- Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 01:17, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

:You said: What vandalism?...I make no apologies for adding to the historical record. Putting up a still image taken from video of the president that misrepresents his moving his hand across his face in an attempt to indicate that he was giving the finger to the American people is vandalism. You will get blocked for this sort of thing if it continues. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 01:23, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Uh, excuse me? HE DID give the finger to the American people, and proudly bragged of his "victory salute". I can send a video clip if you'd like.-- Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 01:28, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Upon further research, your insinuation that this was to the American people is utterly baseless. He was goofing off before the taping of something else. He never bragged about it. He said in response to the laughs it garnered from the camera crew, "It's just my one fingered victory salute." It never went to air. It doesn't add anything to the article. It certainly doesn't belong in his religious beliefs section. You are in violation of WP:POINT and WP:NPOV. Should you continue in such a manner I will refer you to an admin to carry out the warning above. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 01:43, 10 January 2006 (UTC) Advice
Wait a minute. How have I violated WP:POINT and WP:NPOV? Having just skimmed through it, I may not be as well versed in Wikipedia rules as some. But, I did not "try to make a point", other than contribute to an article that seemed a little more than biased in favor of the subject (My use of the image in a userbox is another issue altogether). If there is any POV violation it would be the author of the page and defenders of it. Regardless if Bush knew the camera was on, his true beliefs on the subject of his election are clear (despite whatever whitewashed babble his handlers ensure the public see) He said in response to the laughs he got as his "one fingered victory salute" isn't bragging? Excuse me? The only reason these things aren't commonly known (which would be useful to the public) is because they are censored and sent down the memory hole. How else is something going to be the "official" public record? Must the man publicly abuse an audience of thousands for history to record what he really was? By that reasoning, Nixon's tapes should never have been disclosed, the Pentagon Papers should never have become publicly known, and human history would look a lot like the old Soviet Union's version of things, down the memory hole. --Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 02:06, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
see response at User talk:Mike Nobody
Perhaps you could create a paragraph about the picture and place the picture next to it. --NaconKantari 02:41, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm searching for more details about the specifics of what happened when this picture was taken. It may take me some time. On a sidenote, I was hoping I could still use it in a userbox. Maybe it's too soon after this friction over the pic, it seems to piss people off very easily. I guess I have a talent for that.--Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 03:16, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Duplicate Picture

Oh, ok. I wasn't aware that the image was already available. It would have saved me a lot of trouble to know that before. Sorry about the inconvenience. But, I have taken up the subject of adding it into Bushs' article with an administrator, soon as I finish digging around to get more information.--Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 03:39, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] South Park version of The Dude

This is free clipart, NOT a character from South Park. Although it is based on characters from South Park (animation style) and The Big Lebowski" (The Dude) it is not a direct copy from either of these works. Someone changed the page.--

Mike Nobody ¿ =/\= 04:07, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

If the image is free clip art then one of two things must be true:

You created it yourselff, in which case you must add some form of self attribution license to the image page You got it from a free use database of clip art, in which case you must state the source on the image page

Although I am responsible for using South Park Studio's website to create the icon, the website allows users to freely use the art as long as they don't claim to have "made it themselves". Sounds reasonable. Check out their page on copyright (click "English" language, which will take you into the program, a button marked "copyright" is plainly visible in the work area to create a character). Besides attributing their site as the origin of where I made it, I'm not exactly sure how to word that on the page where the image is uploaded. I cannot claim credit to create it, but there is no image on the site where someone could say I copied it.--

[edit] Changing names

How long have bureaucrats had this ability? WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 21:02, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I can't find the page telling me, so I'm not entirely sure, but I think it was covered in the Signpost when it happened. Perhaps asking a bureaucrat is easier. They'll have an easier time remembering when they received their power to change usernames. - Mgm|(talk) 08:58, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
