Watertown Square (MBTA station)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Watertown Square in Watertown, Massachusetts is the termination point of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's route 71 trackless trolley and several bus routes, including (as of 2005) the 52, 57, 59, 502 and 504. Buses 70 and 70A pass through Watertown Square.

Watertown Yard (a/k/a Watertown Carhouse) is located across the Charles River from Watertown Square and was formerly the terminus of the Green Line "A" Branch. It was used to store and service streetcars even well after the replacement of the Green Line "A" Branch by bus route 57, and even for a few years after the removal of the tracks on this route. As of 2006, wrecked MBTA Type 7 streetcar #3648 is still stored there. Up through January 2006, it was also used for servicing, storage, and testing of new dual-mode buses and trolleybuses that the MBTA had purchased but not yet accepted into regular service. (The current round of acquisition and acceptance of this type of equipment is now complete.)

As of 2006, MBTA bus 59 and trackless trolley 71 stop in the turnaround (also taxistand) at Watertown Square. Buses 70 and 70A stop at designated stops along Main Street. Buses 52, 57, 502 and 504 use Watertown Yard.
