[edit] History

Many small trade unions formed in the 1880's inspired by the success of the Labour Protection League and the London Dock Strike of 1889. Three that were centered around the Thames and the River Medway were the: Amalgamated Society of Watermen, Lightermen of the river Thames (1872-1902), the Society of Watchmen of the Port of London (1898-1901), and the Medway Sailing Bargemen's Union (circa 1890-1901)

All three then merged to form the: Amalgamated Society of Watermen, Lightermen and Watchmen (1901-1914) which later became the: Amalgamated Society of Watermen, Lightermen and Bargemen (1914-1922)
