Waterloo Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Waterloo Tunnel in Liverpool, England is a former railway tunnel, 862 metres long, which opened in 1849. At its western end was Waterloo Goods railway station, with the line continuing beyond this to Liverpool Riverside railway station and the dock railway system. The eastern end opens into a short cutting which connects to the Victoria Tunnel, which emerges at Edge Hill station. Both tunnels closed on 19 November 1972. It is effectively one long tunnel from Edge Hill to Liverpool Waterloo Dock; it is unclear why they were given two different names.
The tunnel passes beneath the Northern Line (Merseyrail) about a quarter of a mile North of the site of the former Liverpool Exchange railway station.
For many years Merseyrail have been in talks to reopen this tunnel to Edge Hill for a new line that would connect onto the Canada Dock Branch at the Edge Hill railway station area with new stations along this tunnel like a university station and hospital. It was decided in May 2007 that this plan is to go ahead.
