Water ionizer

A water ionizer is an appliance that filters and ionizes water.

A water ionizer separates water into an alkaline fraction and an acid fraction. It does this by exploiting the electric charge of the calcium and magnesium ions present in nearly all sources of drinking water. When a source of water lacks mineral ions -- such as distilled water or water filtered via reverse osmosis -- a water ionizer has negligible effect.

The pH of the water can be determined using a test kit test; many ionizers include a pH testing feature, as well as a meter to assess alkaline water's reduction potential.

The oxygen reduction potential, (ORP) of ionized water can be determined using an ORP meter measuring a negative millivolt charge.

[edit] Uses

Research suggests that reduced water may be useful in scavenging free radicals.[1] Tests on in vitro lymphocytes suggest that reduced water can prevent hydrogen peroxide-induced damage to DNA, RNA and certain proteins.[2]
