Waste compaction
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Waste compaction is the process of compacting waste. It is often used to reduce the size of waste material. Garbage compactors and waste collection vehicles compress waste so that more of it can be stored in the same space. It is compacted again, more thoroughly, at the landfill to preserve valuable space and to make the landfill more stable.
[edit] Landfill compaction
A landfill compaction vehicle has two main functions: to spread the waste evenly in layers over the landfill and to compact waste in order to reduce the volume it occupies and help stabilize the landfill. Compaction is a good way to make more space in a landfill. Landfill compactors range in size and shape, Larger landfills use larger compactors that can weight over 100,000 Lbs. Landfill compactors are equipped with steel wheels that have special teeth that penetrate the waste and deliver a focused compression point that provides compaction and ultimately increased density.
